Hugh Jackman Will Host the 2009 Oscars
Okay, fine by me...
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences just announced the 2009 Oscars will stay clear of the comedy, at least when it comes to its host as Hugh Jackman has been named the host of the 81st Academy Awards. Rumors started online late yesterday and the official confirmation just arrived with producer Laurence Mark and executive producer Bill Condon issuing a joint statement saying, "Hugh Jackman is a consummate entertainer and an internationally renowned movie star. He also has style, elegance and a sense of occasion. Hugh is the ideal choice to host a celebration of the year's movies — and to have fun doing it."
It remains unclear as to whether this will be a complete distancing from the comedic presenters from previous years as Jackman follows up the likes of Jon Stewart, Ellen DeGeneres, Chris Rock, Billy Crystal and Steve Martin as the most recent comedic talents to host the big show.
I can only assume talent will be brought in to offer up a few occasional laughs or embelish on the actual presenting of awards. I just hope it doesn't turn into an MTV Awards scenario and end up a Romper Room presentation. I am sure we will be able to figure a little more out once the list of presenters begins to fill up.

Interesting idea…I really liked Jon Stewart and would've been okay with him coming back, but I'm willing to try someone knew. At least it isn't Oprah.
Out of nowhere but a solid choice. Anybody remember the short lived Viva Laughlin (the US version of Blackpool)? X-Men fans will probably be disappointed when they see him dancing across the stage though.
Definitely a good choice in my book.
too bad for ricky gervais. he would've been great. but maybe hugh will help bring in the ratings.
Jackman isn't funny….
@Jerzey Jon: Jackman is funny, in X2 in the mansion with Iceman just before Stryker's men attack, thats a funny scene.
Just cause he is too tall does not mean he is a bad Wolverine
emmm, we need someone funny.
for what it's worth I've seen inerviews with Jackman and he always comes across as an intelligent, funny guy. Of course he also seems to be a flaming homosexual (he was singing show tunes and brought up a few women to do a rockettes kick line on Inside The Actors Studio). But I think he will be interesting as host.
On a side note, Brad, are you gonna have that wolverine trailer they said came out with the day the earth stood still?
I think Jackman is definitely a solid choice. He has been nominated for Emmy twice for his performance as the host of 58th and 59th Tony. And he won one.
Looks like it's time for him to take on to another level of challenge.
@Jerzey Jon: Jackman *is* funny — you should see him in interviews and behind-the-scene's.
