Variety reports that Paramount Pictures has acquiredthe film rights to "The Serpent and the Eagle," an epic project that Ron Howard will direct about the Spanish conquest of Mexico in 1520.

Brian Helgeland has been tapped to right a new draft of the script, which originated at Universal right when Howard rightly passed on The Alamo but was still intrigued by the history of Mexico.

Brian Grazer and Howard's Imagine Entertainment then acquired a script by Hans Beimler and Robert Wolfe that focused on how the Spanish conqueror Hernando Cortez plundered the Aztec nation aided by an Aztec princess-turned-slave nad voila here we have it.

There is no word on a timeline for the feature, but Variety goes on to say that it is one of the top priorities for Howard at this moment.
