'How to Train Your Dragon' Leads Way with 15 Annie Award Nominations

Of course, there is a bit of a black shadow over these awards

Nominees for the 38th Annual Annie Nominations were announced this morning with How to Train Your Dragon coming away as the top nominee with 15 noms including Best Animated Feature alongside Despicable Me, Tangled, The Illusionist and Toy Story 3.

Of course, you should probably note that Walt Disney Pictures withdrew from the International Animated Film Society, ASIFA-Hollywood earlier this year with Disney-Pixar president Ed Catmull telling Variety, "After more than a year of discussions with the ASIFA board, we have regretfully decided to withdraw from the organization and no longer participate in the annual Annie Awards… We believe there is an issue with the way the Annies are judged, and have been seeking a mutually agreeable solution with the board. Although some initial steps have been taken, the board informed us that no further changes would be made to address our concerns."

Much of this was assumed to have to do with what was perceived to be an unfair balance in membership, tipping the scales the way of DreamWorks Animation, which some may remember swept the awards back in 2009 when Kung Fu Panda took home 11 Annies and WALL•E went home empty handed.

Toy Story 3 and Tangled still received nominations this year, and can win, but it certainly casts an ominous shadow over the proceedings.

Check out the film nominees below and if you are interested in the television nominations you can check them out at the Annie Awards official site right here. The 38th Annual Annie Awards are scheduled for Saturday, February 5, 2011 at UCLA's Royce Hall in Los Angeles, California.

DWA should sweep, but that's going to be the extent of it since they won't be needing those same acceptance speeches on the other award shows.

Funny thing is that HTTYD actually deserves to win over Toy Story 3 in these categories.

  3. WTF

THIS IS THE BEST ANIMATED FILM OF THE YEAR… YES TOY STORY 3 made a billion over the summer (mainly because of it's sequel status).. BUT this is the better animated film BY FAR>.. it's sad that Toy Story 3 will most likely get a Oscar nod but this one will be passed on (silly).. It's this kind of crap that makes a person start to hate specific companies.. and I am starting to get anoid by pixar.. prefer dreamworks animation bigtime.. GO KUNG Fu Panda pt 2 (beat pixars ass bigtime)…

Pixar films like Wall-E, Ratatouille, TS3, and others will be a topic of discussion years and years down the road from film schools, film buffs, and casual moviegoers. I don't think the same will hold true with great DWA like HTTYD and KFP. DWA had a great series in Shrek, but they ran it to the damn ground and now the name alone ilicits shrugs and moans instead of excitement like it did in its early years. I fear they are doing the same with HTTYD and KFP.

HTTYD was better on various technical aspects than TS3, but it can't hold a candle to TS3's screenplay. TS3 will rightfully win the animated awards outside the Annies and earn a BP Oscar nom to boot.

How on EARTH was HTTYD better than TS3? Could someone explain?

I don't know, some people are nuts.

The story of HTTYD was good mindless action, but there were lots of holes and a lack of character development. There was also a lot of absurd occurrences in the movie… Toy Story had none of those and was a masterful film.

      Break it down like this:

HTTYD was an excellent animated film.
Toy Story 3 is an excellent film, period.

I like how all the Pixies are so mad about this. Jeez, just be happy any animated films get nominated.
