How Much Does the Trailer for Ben Affleck's 'The Town' Spoil the Movie?
Could be a little, could be a lot
You all know I do my best to avoid watching trailers in hopes of seeing most movies with no preconceptions. We can't avoid expectation based on cast, director or genre, but other than that it's my opinion the less you know about the story the movie's telling the better the chance you have of properly evaluating and experiencing what's on screen. Unfortunately, with both the trailer for Due Date and Ben Affleck's The Town I couldn't avoid them as both played in front of both of my screenings of Inception earlier this week.
I guess the silver lining here is both films look pretty good and I think The Town looks excellent, but I'll be damned if it doesn't seem like it spoils a lot of the movie. However, what I do know of the movie seems like most of the story details revealed in the trailer take place in the opening moments. That said, this time I'm not giving you the traditional synopsis breakdown at this moment and we'll see just how much of the film you can put together with just the trailer alone.
If you want more, you can get the full synopsis right here. The Town hits theaters on September 17 and along with Affleck, who directed and co-wrote the screenplay, the film co-stars Rebecca Hall, Jon Hamm, Jeremy Renner, Blake Lively, Pete Postlethwaite and Chris Cooper. The film is based on the novel "Prince of Thieves" by Chuck Hogan and Affleck worked on the script with Peter Craig and Gone Baby Gone co-writer Aaron Stockard.
I have this film listed as one of my Oscar contenders… Do you agree?

Damn it I just posted this in another section! lol
I think the trailer previews an intense, fast-paced crime melodrama that coud be a sleeper-hit of the fall.
This looks awesome. The Town, Social Network and Biutiful…this could be an excellent half a year for cinema.
I think the town shows way way too much in that trailer. I felt they basically just gave me a video summary of the movie.
The Town looks good and I enjoyed Gone Baby Gone – but if I had already guessed the reveal about Affleck's character before it happened in the trailer does it count as giving too much away?
That was my reaction too… nice to see that they don't treat it as some kind of big twist to keep secret, because it is predictable.
Yeah, because if the 'spoil' in the question is that moment – unless I'm wrong because there isn't much else that looks spoilery as such – then I don't think that spoils anything personally.
It's a pretty easy twist to see coming. Of course I've not read the novel it's based on so I can't tell if anything else in the trailer constitutes a big giveaway.
Very impressive. I can't believe im saying that about Ben Affleck. FYI just got home from Inception, Amazing.
Damn good, I have my doubts about actor Affleck, but… Hall, Renner, Jon Hamm and Affleck directing another gritty Boston crime drama? Sign me up.
look good, but not oscar
Looks good. Maybe oscar for best pic, idk, but Jeremy Renner looks like he's shooting for best supporting actor.
I think it gives away some spoilers but I am still a little confused with the plot.
This looks really good and I hope it gains the attention that his other great film failed to do.
GONE BABY GONE was overlooked.
I don't think we can tell if this (or the Social Network) or any film is Oscar worthy based on a trailer. I agree Gone Baby Gone was overlooked. It has stayed with me after 3 years and Atonement and Michael Clayton have not. As far as the trailer, it doesn't give any more away than the synopsis on any web site. The main description is that a thief falls for the woman he robbed.
I think The Town looks fantastic, something of a mix between Heat and a more serious version of Point Break. That said, I'm upset that I watched the trailer.
Off topic, but the same thing goes for the Charlie St. Cloud trailer which oddly played before my screening of Inception last night.
Looks boring.
Yeah I almost fell asleep. Gun fights and bank robberies? Might as well be lullabies and bed time stories.
I agree with those who said it was a predictable 'twist' anyway. From the trailer it appears to be a stock standard bank robbery flick throw in a love affair and moral crossroad.
I hope it does it well though because it looks good.
I thought they gave too much away in the Gone Baby Gone trailer but I didn't see the 'end' coming in that one, so I'm hoping the same thing will happen here. The trailer is fantastic though. I know there's some sort of epic Fenway Park finale so I'm glad they didn't give that away in the trailer….
So I actually saw this in April at a market research screening and I LOOOOVED it. I was also a big fan of Gone Baby Gone which I agree was overlooked. This trailer doesn't give too much away because from the beginning of the movie you know that Affleck's character is trying to pull one over on the girl they kidnapped. It does have some interesting twists along the way. I will say that Renner should get significant consideration for best supporting actor. He was amazing, I was really pulling for him to win best actor last year for The Hurt Locker but I guess Bridges deserved it too.
It definitely gave away too much. We didn't need to know that Ben Affleck was in on it at all.
You find out almost immediately anyway, its not like its a huge question lingering throughout the movie.
The book was amazing and I have a feeling this movie will live up to it.
Yeah it gave a lot away, but it looks like it's gonna be awesome.
It seems to spoil a lot of the story but I believe you when you say that there's more to come. Personally I feel that Ben Affleck is an actor that I don't seem to be able to take seriously. So I'm hoping he soon makes the move and steps back behind the camera. I heard good things about Gone Baby Gone but I've yet to see the film. I really should watch it.
i will admit anything Ben Affleck is in has me a little weary. But he seems to be a great director as proven with Gone Baby Gone. This looks incredible. The synopsis made it seem just like another heist thriller but i definatley think the trailer makes it look like an oscar contender for sure
This looks excellent. I saw this trailer with Inception (incredible movie by the way) and i am looking forward to this one a lot.
The bigger (seeming) spoiler from that trailer are the two shots of Renner walking down a street in guard disguise with a guy behind him and out of focus in a blue wind breaker and green shirt on and the second shot of Renner turning at that moment and openning up with full automatic on that guy with no possibility of missing him. If you watch the rest of the trailer real careful you will see one other MAJOR character wearing exactly that blue windbreaker and green shirt….look for yourself. I'd says its a big spoiler.
