'Hope Springs' Trailer with Meryl Streep, Tommy Lee Jones and Steve Carell

We looking at an Oscar contender?

Hope Springs posterThe first trailer and poster for hope Springs starring Meryl Streep, Tommy Lee Jones and Steve Carell came online last night (via Moviefone) offering the first look at the upcoming dramedy set to hit theaters on August 10.

I included Streep in my early Best Actress predictions, but I'm not expecting her to crack the top five.

Directed by Streep's The Devil Wears Prada helmer, David Frankel, and written by "Game of Thrones" and "Everwood" scripter Vanessa Taylor the story centers on a devoted couple (Streep and Jones) who seek the help of a renowned couple's specialist (Carell). Once she's able to convince him to go, the real challenge for both of them comes as they shed their bedroom hang-ups and try to re-ignite the spark that caused them to fall for each other in the first place.

I've included the trailer directly below. Give it a watch and let me know what you think of Streep's Oscar chances or, perhaps, do you see a chance for Jones or Carell? And beyond that, does it simply look like a good movie, which we all know is more important than an Oscar anyway?

I'm asking because I didn't watch the trailer. This is one I can wait until August to see.

Have a hunch that this is more 'Mamma Mia!' than 'The Devil Wears Prada' for Meryl Streep.

Pass. Looks like they're going for "look at these old people try to have sex" jokes for an hour and a half. Plus I'm tired of Meryl Streep.

Tired of Streep? how does that happen? she's electrifying even when she's bad.

  • samlane86

Looks funny enough, but I'm doubtful on it's Oscar chances.

No Oscar chances here folks which is fine. It must be a relief for her to play these lightweight characters without the pressure of award season looming over the shoulders. I will definitely check it out. It seems harmless, somewhat funny and definitely enjoyable. Both actors are not really stretching their skills here. Jones is doing the typical uptight thing and Meryl is giving me standard Meryl mannerisms. I mean it is lightweight comedy, so both actors have earned the right to relax and just have fun. Golden Globe nomination maybe.

Contender? Sure she is. Top tier? Nope

I don;t think there will be Oscar for Streep. But I'm sure there will be at least a Globes nomination.

Not an Oscar-type movie. And Streep will be good as always, but there's nothing unique enough here for her to get awards from.

Otherwise, looks kinda weird and awkward. Streep and Jones have good chemistry, but do we really want to watch old people sex jokes for 90 minutes? And is the only way to improve your marriage to learn how to masturbate on your own and discuss fantasy threesomes? Cuz that's the only thing couples counselors in movies ever seem to tell people to do, and I find it weird and kinda gross.

I think others are missing the point.

This is not a prestige movie vying for awards' recognition.

It is, however, a commercial movie designed to appeal to the growing and lucrative 'grey' market: a middle-class baby boomer white audience that has too much money and want to be entertained.

This movie will appeal to a mature audience the way a film about giant transforming robots that beat each other will appeal to fanboys, or a flick about soapy vampires will attract the attention of silly teenage girls.

Anyone remember Steve Carrell delivering the "that makes one of us" line verbatim in Little Miss Sunshine? On purpose or just chance?

The success of this film will not be judged by the number of oscar nominations it garners, but how much it grosses. Don't be surprised if it tops $100M. "It's Complicated" did. I'm sure Meryl would be completely happy if it were a box office winner.

I saw this at a test screening in Jan and Tommy Lee Jones steals the fim. He is fantastic and I predict gets an Oscar nomination. He has 2 oter films also out later this year and he is very well-liked.
Streep might also get nominated, but would not win.

This looks like a chic flick, but that's ok because I'm one. I hope my husband will accompany me to see this and he is great about being open minded when it's regarding a love story which this undoubtedly is. I enjoy any movie with Meryl Streep and I like Tommy Lee. I think this will be a very feel good movie when it's all said and done.
