Hop

The weekend belongs to the kiddies as I believe Spring Break is coming to an end around the States, giving Hop a leg up on matinee business, the #1 spot on Friday and an assured win for the three-day weekend. The Easter-themed picture pulled in $11.4 million on Friday well on its way to a $36+ million weekend, which is likely the first of a trio of potential upcoming successes for Universal as it has Your Highness and Fast Five on the horizon.

In second Summit's Source Code didn't exactly tear up the box-office, but performed respectably. The Duncan Jones-directed sci-fi brought in $5 million and should do around $13m for the weekend. It wasn't a big budget flick by any means at a reported $32 million, and I'm sure the studio will be happy with these numbers.

Even happier will be FilmDistrict, whose first film Insidious brought in an estimated $4.8 million from 500 fewer theaters than Source Code. It will probably end the weekend around $12 million and it's definitely a flick I'd be curious to hear what people thought of it. It plays like most every other PG-13 horror/thriller you've ever seen, but ramps up the jump scares to a whole new level. I got mildly annoyed with it as it dragged on, but I wonder if audiences will be more forgiving.

As far as previous releases go, Limitless is still holding on strong, looking at about an $8 million weekend, but Sucker Punch is looking at about a 68% drop from last weekend's $19 million second place opening. The film took in an estimated $1.9 million on Friday, which should translate to no more than $6 million for the three-day.

Otherwise, numbers for the PG-13 release of The King's Speech have yet to be reported, but The Hollywood Reporter says "[e]arly estimates show the new version staying at about the same level as last weekend, when the movie grossed $1.6 million."

I will be back tomorrow morning with a complete wrap-up. Here's the Friday top ten.

  1. Hop – $11.4 million
  2. Source Code – $5 million
  3. Insidious – $4.8 million
  4. Limitless – $3 million
  5. Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Roderick Rules – $2.8 million
  6. The Lincoln Lawyer – $2 million
  7. Sucker Punch – $1.9 million
  8. Rango – $1.2 million
  9. Paul – $1.2 million
  10. Battle: Los Angeles – $1 million

  1. I think you are way too low on Source Code and Limitless. The former should make at least $15 million as Unknown, Adjustment Bureau and Limitless all made 3x their respective Friday grosses in full weekend. And Source Code should have great word-of-mouth. Same with Limitless, after amazing holds it's been having I would expect no less than a $10 million weekend after a $3 million Friday.

Insidious should be kinda frontloaded so yeah, $12 million should be where it ends up. I saw the flick today and unabashedly liked it, though I could easily see how others could get annoyed by it. I never did, yeah the jump scares were overwhelming, but it seemed to me the filmmakers were well aware of it and were just having fun, and I was able to do the same pretty easily. Credible performances, decent pacing, and how can you not love this kind of ending.

Hop certainly overperformed as it appears to me, but the fact that it's on track to outgross Rango makes me really sad. It could well have an opening north of $40 million, considering Rango was able to make $38m after a $9.8 million Friday. We'll see though.

I agree with you on Insidious, it definitely has a fun factor to it, which is part of its charm. The jump scares just annoyed me a bit more than they did you. I will say, also, the title screen was great, not sure about your audience, but mine really liked it as well.

      • Sadly at my 10 a.m. showing there wasn't much of an audience (and I couldn't see it in any other time), but I could hear that those who were there were really into it from beginning to end. Personally I loved the title screen as well.

For me, it's either Hanna or Source Code next week. Though Arthur will undoubtedly win next weekend, those are two of the three wide releases which currently interest me (the other being Rango).

Also, someone please cast the talented James Marsden in a good movie.

I'm surprised at the modest number for Source Code. I just got out of a jam-packed 11:30 showing, even more impressive in my eyes considering both of the local baseball teams (Cubs and White Sox) were playing at the same time. I usually have the theater to myself in those early matinees.

Hop is getting great WOM from kids. That is all that matters. It will be number 1 next weekend. Love how Sucker punch will have a 70% drop this weekend.

  5. Tony

If hop does 40 million then that would mean that we would have 5 movies in April that will open to 40+ in the Boxoffice. Hop, Rio, Scream 4, Madea and Fast Five.

  6. Sona

outstanding for HOP. Should be number 1 next weekend to. Heard kids are love it. Pretty much locked for 100 million. Major ouch for sucker punch. This month will be huge.

Not surprised by any of the numbers this week tbh. However, I'm beginning to see a pattern.
Source Code underwhelms somewhat, Prince of Persia and Love and Other Drugs each do meager numbers. Is anyone else catching my drift here?

I would hardly give the blame to Jake here. The previous two films didn't receive that many great reviews and were overshadowed by more interesting looking films.

You might disagree but I always thought the power genuine "Movie Stars" held was opening films that otherwise weren't very viable.
To me Jake is the male version of Hathaway. Hollywood trips all over themselves to shower him with parts even though he's not really proven to be that popular with the general movie going public.

Andrew is exactly right. Any time I consider whether or not someone is a "draw" I look back to the prime of Tom Cruise. That guy could open something like Vanilla Sky with nearly the same success as his blockbusters like Mission: Impossible. They guy almost never had a flop.

Sadly I do, Andrew. As much as I love Gyllenhaal, I think it's time for Hollywood put the brakes on that whole "let's make Jakey G a star" train.

And it's not just because of the films you mentioned… look at Brothers, Rendition and Zodiac as well. His only films that could be considered successes are Brokeback Mountain and The Day After Tomorrow, neither of which can really be attributed to his name.

Jake is not really a Boxoffice draw. He makes some good films but he's nobody you would run and pay $10 to see. Just saying.

  9. Ian

Love that massive drop for Sucker Punch. Hop looks like it will do a bit better and Source Code a bit worse than I anticipated.

Brad, would you consider possibly posting a "discuss the ending" type thread for Source Code as you did last summer for Inception? I realize it's not nearly as open-ended, but I've read a few different interpretations it seems there's some interesting discussion to be had. I saw it today and it's probably the best film I've seen this year, but I'm not completely convinced on my interpretation of the ending and I'd love to hear what other people think in a setting where you don't have to worry about revealing spoilers.

  10. Casper

Next weekend either Hop or Arthur will be on top

  11. Rachel

I'm curious as to what Super made.
