Get your fantasy film fix all at once

In headline order, we'll start this fantasy film update with a Twitter message from Production Weekly regarding Guillermo del Toro's The Hobbit that reads as follows:

Guillermo del Toro's adaptation of JRR Tolkien’s "The Hobbit" is due to begin a 14 month production schedule this June in New Zealand.

Recently Spoiler TV posted a casting breakdown for the film as we are still without a Bilbo Baggins, the role played by Ian Holm in Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy. Holm, obviously won't fit the age requirements of the younger Bilbo as the casting is looking for someone between 25-35 years-old. Several names including Tobey Maguire and James McAvoy have been rumored for the role, but all have proven false so we will have to just sit and wait.

Speaking of Tobey Maguire, he won't have to worry about putting those webbed tights on any time soon as news arrives that will stir the fanboy pot. Variety has confirmed earlier reports from Deadline.com and IESB.net that Spider-Man 4 is on indefinite hold as a result of script issues. Finke goes as far as to say a Sony source told her director Sam Raimi "hated" the script from writers Jamie Vanderbilt, David Lindsay-Abaire and Gary Ross.

So, while Alvin Sargent has been brought in to take another stab at the story that May 5, 2011 release date looks a bit daunting. A source at Sony told Variety, "We'll try, but I think making May is a real question. We will not start until we have it right. The feeling is we are not going to rush it to make the date." If they had only taken that tactic with Spider-Man 3.

Finally, more comicbook movie news arrives as Variety's Tatiana Siegel reports Zombieland scripters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick will pen the feature film adaptation Deadpool, which will feature Ryan Reynolds as the wise-cracking mercenary he originated in 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Word is Reese and Wernick will stay true to the mythology of Marvel's "Deadpool" comic given that Reynolds is a huge fan and protector of the property.

Apparently there is no rush to get the film into production with Reynolds wrapping production on Green Lantern this summer once it begins filming next month under the direction of Martin Campbell for a June 17, 2011 release.

if Reynolds is a big fan of Deadpool, why Wolverine?

    • K_Stewie

because deadpool was in wolverine's past and a major part of project x. The only thing is they messed up on deadpool really bad in that movie. for example deadpool did not have scott sommers powers.

Doesn't that mean he should film that script? I mean, he obviously liked the Spider-Man 3 script.

Deadpool needs to be re-cast. It would have been fine with me if he would have just done one or the other but to play the role of two different superheroes….kinda greedy Reynolds.

    • K_Stewie

that is not greedy. first off these two characters will never met because they are from two different kinds of comics. I mean that's like calling Robert Downey JR. greedy for playing Iron man and Sherlock Holmes. Which he did excellent in both roles. Doing both just means that he is the best one for each role and I think he will do fine.

Ummm. The guy named deadpool and the guy in Wolverine are the same person just different names. Its his secret identity as most of Marvel has their heroes. And if the director hates the script then obvously he's not going to use it if he has that power to choose. He liked the Spidey 3 script which scares me. The thing they did with showing the Spidey going evil by dancing was horrid and made for a quick useful bathroom break. They should have had him make an attempt at murder or something. Venom is morbidly funny like that. It would've been true to the comics and also fed to the competition of Marvel vs. DC. Especially with how well fans loved Dark Knight with the Joker and all.

    @ – Thomas:

I believe Tyler C was referring to Reynolds playing The Green Lantern when he said Deadpool should be recast. Personally, I don't have any problem with him playing both roles… they'll never cross over, after all.

  7. Daniel

    Brad,

Do you know if that 14 month time schedule includes both films or just the first one?

  8. Matt

Most people in Hollywood know that Sam Raimi actually didn't like the Spidey 3 script. He hated the idea of having Venom in the film because it's a character he never liked. He's a fan of the Spidey stories in the 60s/70s not 80s/90s. The producers of the films forced Venom on him because that's what they thought fans wanted.

Since Spidey 3 was a critical failure and Sam had Venom forced upon him, I'm glad he's taking his time so they can get a script all parties involved are happy with.

As for The Hobbit, I heard they are going to film both films during the 14-month production schedule.

Regarding Ryan Reynolds, I'm more annoyed that he already appeared in a Marvel movie (Blade 3) than anything else. It's fine if an actor takes on multiple superhero roles as long as they don't exist in the same universe (i.e. Marvel, DC). He should have never been cast in Wolverine.

    @Matt:
Actually i think ryan reynolds was one of the only good things about wolverine.

    • K_Stewie

I agree with you Mikey. They totally ruined Wolverine, my brother and I are great fans of X-men and we both like wolverine but the way they did the movie just made it suck. we almost didn't watch the whole movie, but we did hoping that it would get better and unfortunetly it didn't and we even got mad on how they made Deadpool. I mean giving him cylcopes powers and having his swords come out of his arms like wolverine. I mean come on didn't these guys ever pick up the comic book and take a look at deadpool.

"If they had only taken that tactic with Spider-Man 3."

If only they had taken that tactic when with Spider-Man 1 and 2…

Personally I think a delay is a blessing in disquise. That crap about the Vulturess, ruining the Black Cat, and no Lizard? It's obvious at least 1/2 the movie needs to be about the Lizard and what spider-man must do to help Dr. Curt Connors, and that struggle. In fact if they shorten it down to 1 hour and 45 minutes that's all they would need for one movie.
They could add Kraven and have him hunting one or the other or both at some point and still make 2 hours and 15 minutes, but I think Dr. Curt Connors and the Lizard could be about enough for one movie, at least until 5 where maybe he could return and they could go with Kraven.
Kind of sad when random man can come up with a better plot for the movie then those morons or Sam Raimi…

  11. Seiko

@Seiko: While inserting Venom in the last 20 minutes of the movie was a bad decision, the mere fact that Sam Raimi doesn't like Venom should be a clear factor that he never should've been aloud to make a Spider-Man movie to begin with.

Where is the Venom Spin-Off Already? I will be happy to watch this sort of thing without whiney Spider-Man in the mix? Will we see Carnage? One would hope so…heck insert the F4 to help out and you'll have one awesome movie…

And where the hell is Silver Surfer? God what is wrong with the morons making these movies?

  12. Tony

I think that Bruce Payne should be cast in this film as one of the villains- Smaug, Thranduil or one of the Trolls with Cockney accents.

  13. K_Stewie

I think Sam Raimi should not make any more Spider-man movies, the way the third one was handle even if Venom was fored on him was a complete waste of a movie. When it comes to villians you should not have more than two in a single movie. Having more than two just throws it out of whack and that whole jazz rotine was just horrific. Toby made peter just look stupid and pathetic in that segment. to me if you do a movie based off a comic then you better know and like all of it because the fans do and when you don't put the right kind of effort into a single character like Venom who I really love as a bad guy then you should not even touch anything related to that comic.

  14. Emmis Doubleew

What Deadpool needs: a) lose the eyebeams. b)lose the arm-swords. and c) give him two voice-overs ala the internal voices in his head in the comics; something that would add a new twist on traditional voice-overs and work in conjunction with the breaking of the fourth wall. Oh yeah, lose the teleportation also.
