'Hobbit' Finds Hugo, Andy and Ian; Plus Some Smaug-y Details
I wonder when 'Hobbit' news will become a regular thing
I last read J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Hobbit" about six or seven years ago and to be honest I can hardly fit the details together if at all. So, when director Guillermo del Toro starts talking about sub-plots I am entirely lost, but I am sure some of you may be a little more familiar with the text and have likely read it a few more times than myself.
The news I am referring to comes from BBC Radio's Simon Mayo Show in which del Toro talked about the work he has already put in on The Hobbit and the work left to do. The news you have probably read all over the Internet already has to do with the official confirmation of Andy Serkis, Ian McKellen and Hugo Weaving coming back to reprise their Lord of the Rings roles as Gollum, Gandalf and Elrond respectively, but seeing how I am not about to listen to the radio chat (which you can do right here) I am relying on a report of the goings on from G4's The Feed in which we also learn a few additional details.
Along with the casting news, del Toro revealed the following nuggets:
[The] film will take some liberties with sub-plot material that is briefly discussed in the book. Most notably among this, is Gandalf's departure from Bilbo and the Dwarves to confer with The White Council in Dol Guldur on dealing with an entity called the Necromancer (which later turns out to be Sauron himself.) We've always suspected this based on some statements, but this time, the intention to document Gandalf's quest (which is not covered greatly in the book) was articulated clearly.
Smaug the Dragon, del Toro revealed that after eight whole months of design work, they have only just "cracked the basic engineering." It is anticipated that another six or seven months of application will be needed before the great flying, fire-breathing, gold smuggler will be in any kind of presentable form.
The Hobbit is currently set for a December 2011 release.

Brad I suggest you give The Hobbit another read, it is one of the best adventure stories ever. And since you've seen LOTR, I think the reading experience will stimulate your imgaination even more.
I CANNOT WAIT! GREATEST FANTASY BOOK EVER!!! read this book about 7 times and I love it even more every time! Great news also about the returning cast from LOTR.
I'm getting really excited about this. This Book (the hobbit) was far better than any of the Lord Of The Rings stories. Thus, I think it'll be far better than any of them, even the Twin Towers (my personal favorite one)
I'm beyond excited for this film. I never thought I could get this excited about a film series since the return of Star Wars in 1999 and the first Lord of the Rings in 2001. But, now I find myself a giddy fanboy again. I think Guillermo del Toro will do a fantastic job taking over the reigns from Peter Jackson.
I wonder how long it'll take them to release a teaser trailer…..or even the first image?
Viggo says he's in if they want him. He said that Aragorn is only in the last half of the first Hobbit but then Strider is in The Hobbit II more. That's some cool news !
