This Week On DVD and Blu-ray

'Hobbit' Extended, 'White House Down', 'Twilight' Box Set, James Dean and More on DVD and Blu-ray Today

A lot to choose from and a few titles to actually consider purchasing

This Week On DVD and Blu-ray: November 5, 2013

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (Extended Edition)
A lot of Hobbit related content lately what with the three-minute trailer and eight new posters for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug and now the extended edition of the first film which features 13 additional minutes, bringing the grand total to 182 minutes. Personally, I'm not interested, but if you are, Slashfilm has done a write up on the additional footage.

White House Down
After Olympus Has Fallen, White House Down wasn't able to make much of a domestic impact, even with Hollywood's presumed new golden boy, Channing Tatum, in the lead. However, it did outgross Olympus worldwide, yet the $150 million production budget ultimately proved too much to overcome. Now it hopes to have a life on DVD and Blu-ray, but I wouldn't recommend buying it... rental at best.

James Dean Ultimate Collector's Edition (Blu-ray)
Including East of Eden, Rebel without a Cause and Giant, this looks to be a pretty solid Blu-ray collection. I haven't had a chance to check out the quality of the releases, but these are three films worth considering adding to your collection.

Girl Most Likely

I remember when this was titled Imogene and premiered at the Toronto Film Festival where very few people ended up seeing it. I still haven't seen it, but based on my wife's reaction after she watched the Blu-ray I'm thinking it's one best left a mystery.

Twilight Forever: The Complete Saga
Twilight Forever: The Complete Saga on DVD Blu-ray today
All the Twilight movies in one place with new features and even a look at the animatronic version of Renesmee that never saw the light of day.

Lovelace
Lovelace on DVD Blu-ray today
I'm interested in checking this one out, but only because the directors of Howl are at the helm. I can't say the subject matter is all that intriguing and I don't really expect much in the way of quality. If anything this looks like a film that should have been on Lifetime, but who knows, it could surprise me.

I saw this one at the Toronto Film Festival last year and it was not one of the highlights. You can read my "D" review right here.

Nope, not daring enough to brave these waters.

Parkland

This was a disappointment for me, I expected Parkland to deliver something fascinating and it came a way a bit of a bore. You can read my Toronto Film Festival review from this year right here.

Although it had a nonexistent plot, I actually laughed a decent amount at Grown Ups 2. It may be one of those I pick up for used for cheap.

Can't believe Parkland is already out on blu-ray. Not sure if I'm going to check out.

White House Down was ok, but not worthy of a re-watch. Guess I should really check out Hobbit before the second one comes out (albeit, prob not the extended edition).

Parkland is bad. I'd skip it. And it's not worth buying.

The Hobbit was already too long when I watched it in theaters.. And now 13 more minutes of it? No thank you. The Hobbit is no LOTR.

I'll buy Grown Ups 2 eventually [probably around Boxing Day]. I'll rent White House Down and Parkland as well but that's it.
