Hailee Steinfeld's First Post-'True Grit' Feature Will be 'Romeo and Juliet'

A comparison to Mia Wasikowska's current path is easy to make

A year ago it was reported Lily Collins would play the female lead in Romeo and Juliet for Italian director Carlo Carlei (The Flight of the Innocent), but a year later Collins is now set to play Snow White in Tarsem Singh's The Brothers Grimm: Snow White opening the door for another actress to step in. That actress, the recently Oscar-nominated True Grit stand-out Hailee Steinfeld with her first post-Oscar deal.

Borys Kit at The Hollywood Reporter reports Steinfeld will play one half of the "star-crossed lovers" in the Julian Fellowes (The Young Victoria) penned adaptation of the classic Shakespeare play with the expectation for the film to begin shooting in Italy later this spring.

Steinfeld recently lost out to Jennifer Lawrence to play Katniss Everdeen in Lionsgate's The Hunger Games, the first film in a proposed trilogy based on the Suzanne Collins novel. The route she is now taking, however, reminds me of Mia Wasikowska's recent path as she's gone from Alice in Wonderland and The Kids are All Right to the critically acclaimed Jane Eyre adaptation, which is quite good and still in theaters if you haven't yet seen it.

This isn't the only film in the pipeline for Steinfeld, as it was recently announced she's attached to the title role in Sleeping Beauty (as if the Wasikowska comparison wasn't sold already). The revisionist take on the classic story was penned by Lindsay Devlin, though no director is yet attached.

Another Romeo and Juliet? No matter, I think she will play the part well.

    Any suggestions for Romeo?

I'm sure she'll do excellent as Juliet but do we really need another adaption?

Zefferelli already did this years ago, in Italy, with teenagers, and completely nailed it. I would've thought any more versions of R&J would have been redundant. I mean, why bother when it's already been done right?
Oh, wait, maybe it's going to be in 3D this time. With a CGI Verona skyline.

Hell, as long as they don't fuck this up like Baz Lurhman did with HIS version, this should be good. My god, how I hated Lurhman's version. Who thought that putting Romeo and Juliet in the 1990s and seting in like Rio De Janero was a GOOD IDEA!!!!!

I like Steinfeld, and I think she shall do Juliet justice

If you're complaining about another "Romeo & Juliet" being unnecessary, well, lots of people thougth a new "True Grit" was not just unnecessary, but insulting. Look at how that turned out.

Saying a movie shouldn't be made because there was a previous version made is an anti-art statement, and nobody who says it should be taken seriously.

Who exactly are you talking to? I don't see anyone complaining.

badge called it "redundant", and m1 and rachel commented in a questioning fashion as if it was a bad idea.

I personally don't think it's a bad idea (attempts to film Romeo and Juliet have mostly failed, even though there are a few exceptions). It's just that we've seen too many versions of this particular play. I want to see film adaptations of ones like Much Ado About Nothing and Hamlet as well.

At least she won't have to dress up like a garden gnome for this one. (referring to Emily Blunt).

She'll no doubt be pretty solid in the role, and it sounds like this will be a more literal period set adaption.

I didn't mind Lurhman's take, it had the virtue of trying to be different even if it's not a film I've felt the need to watch more than a couple of times either. At the end of the day the emotion and intent came through alonsgide the then contemporary visuals and that's more important than where it's set sometimes.

    It's a universal story anyway…………
