True Grit

UPDATE: I've added Friday numbers for The Social Network's expansion below.

Well, we may be looking at yet another weekend where True Grit holds the Friday lead over Little Fockers only to end up losing in the end. With $4.5 million, Grit holds a $0.3 million lead over Little Fockers. Last week the lead was $0.4 million and Grit ended up losing by $1.3 million. Will history repeat itself? If we're looking at the same kind of Saturday and Sunday drops as last week we're talking about $13.9 million for Little Fockers and $13.4 million for True Grit. I can't tell you how much I hope that doesn't happen.

As for newcomer Season of the Witch, it landed $3.7 million on Friday from 2,816 theaters and at best that means a $10.7 million weekend, but I would bet it won't crack double digits. Country Strong is the week's other perceived newcomer as it expanded from two theaters to 1,584 and brought in $2.6 million. For a film that cost a reported $12 million to make it's looking at a sub-$8 million weekend.

Elsewhere it's a bunch of Best Picture Oscar contenders with Black Swan taking in $2.4 million, The Fighter taking in $2.2 million and The King's Speech with $1.8 million.

According to Gitesh Pandya of BoxOfficeGuru.com, The Social Network managed $185,000 on Friday from 603 theaters, which likely means something slightly above $500,000 for the weekend. I'm sure Sony hoped the film would crack the $100 million mark as it currently sits at $93 million entering the weekend, but that won't be happening as it will hit DVD and Blu-ray next Tuesday. However, I would bet there was a larger hope to add $3.1 million to the film's total so they could boast a $200 million worldwide cume, that… might happen.

Check out the complete Friday top ten directly below and I'll be here tomorrow with a complete weekend recap. I need to sign off an prepare to watch my Seattle Seahawks try and beat the New Orleans Saints… any chance that happens?

I'd guess that on Saturday Little Fockers will once again take the lead due to the family dollar at work and possibly take the weekend again – even if maybe just narrowly.

There's little chance of The Social Network having enough miles left to crack $100 million US even with the large theatre count increase again. But it might be enough to propel it over the $200 global figure.

I wanted though to throw this out because I saw it asked by somebody else on another site.

Could it be feasable for Black Swan to make it to $100 million? Although it's weekends have never been huge it's holding well and has quite a few weekends left to run over the awards season where it's sure to feature prominently. It will be on nearly $60 million by the time this weekend is through but I don't know if there are any plans to expand it further though but thought I would throw it out here to see what the opinions might be on it/

No huge expansion planned, then again, we were only supposed to peak @ 700 theaters. I think 100MM domestic is a bit out of reach, but definitely 80+ domestic & 140+ worldwide. Best investment i ever made!!!!

  2. If Fockers beats Grit again, I don't know what I'll do. Last weekend I feel like I took it kind of personally.

Sorry in advance about the Seahawks.

I feel that Little Fockers will win weekend although I would like for True Grit to take it. If there's any justice than True Grit should be number 1.At least it desreves to be. If True Grit doesn't take it this weekend than it never will. Let's hope for the best.

Blah, Fockers will win again. It's lining up to be quite a steep drop for True Grit though, almost 50%. Unless it can win some awards and/or pick up some big nominations to keep it in the conversation, $150 million might be too long of a shot.

I pray, PRAY, that True Grit will win.

Does anyone know if The King's Speech is going to expand into more theaters?

  7. The Social Network will probably do 650k or more, but anyway, it won't help it crack $100m. On the other hand, if Sony expands the movie to more than 1000 theaters after Oscar noms, $100m will be a done deal. The Departed and Michael Clayton, which were both released in early October like TSN, both made additional $10 million after a similar expansion. If Sony does the same with TSN, it might end up with 105 by early March.

National Society of Film Critics have announced their awards. How come there's no article regarding that?
