Goyer Directing 'Magneto' Spin-Off

David Goyer recently directed this Friday's opener The Invisible, film that is not being screened for critics which does not bode well for its quality. On top of that Goyer has a very limited directorial resume with Blade: Trinity being the only recognizeable name out of the four films he has helmed. However, that is about to change as Fox has tapped the comic book go-to guy to helm the X-Men spin-off Magneto centering on the villain played in the original trilogy by Ian McKellen.

Goyer seems to have a knack for comic book related films as he is known for penning such comic adaptations as Batman Begins and the entire Blade trilogy. He did do a script for The Flash that was ultimately rejected and has also talked about a Green Lantern adaptation of sorts.

As for Magneto the film will be an origin story in which Magneto comes to grips with his mutant ability to manipulate metal objects as he and his parents try to survive in Auschwitz. Magneto meets Professor Xavier (played as the wheelchair-bound mutant leader by Patrick Stewart in the X-Men trilogy) when the latter is a soldier liberating the concentration camp. McKellen and Stewart's participation in the film is unlikely as both characters will be played by actors in their 20s.

Magneto is one of two X-Men spin-offs, the other being Wolverine scripted by David Benioff and set to star Hugh Jackman. Word is that Fox and Marvel will set a director shortly on that pic.

So, while the X-Men franchise seems to have ended as a trilogy the members will live on. Let's just hope Halle Berry doesn't talk anyone into a Storm movie. Sheesh!
