David Goyer Penning Superman Reboot: It doesn't come as much of a surprise to learn David Goyer has been brought on by Warner Bros. to script The Man of Steel considering Chris Nolan is overseeing the project and Goyer has been involved with Nolan's Batman franchise since day one. The Man of Steel is the latest attempt to get Superman off the ground following Bryan Singer's Superman Returns in 2006. From that film, Brandon Routh and Bryan Singer are not expected to return as the new story involves the same tired villain, Lex Luthor, going against super villain Brainiac. Word is also the Daily Planet is expected to reflect the current news environment and will be struggling due to the Internet. The following LatinoReview link has more potential story details. [Variety / LatinoReview]

Six TV Stars Shortlisted for Captain America: The Internet is buzzing today over the shortlist of six names said to be up for the title role in Marvel's The First Avenger: Captain America. The names listed are John Krasinski ("The Office"), Michael Cassidy ("Smallvile"), Patrick Fluger ("The 4400"), Scott Porter ("Friday Night Lights"), Mike Vogel (Cloverfield) and Chace Crawford ("Gossip Girl"). Joe Johnston (The Wolfman) is directing for Paramount Pictures with a planned release date of July 22, 2011. The studio has put the actors on 30-day holds during the testing process. [Heat Vision]

Rourke to Play Conan's Father: Sorry, can't get too excited about this film, but word is Mickey Rourke will play Corin, Conan's father in Conan for Lionsgate and director Marcus Nispel (Pathfinder). Jason Momoa is set to play the title character in the return to Robert E. Howard's story of the barbarian warrior that put Arnold Schwarzenegger on the acting map. The story sees Conan embark on a quest to avenge the slaughter of his people including his father, Corin. [Heat Vision / LatinoReview (from January)]

Rourke Also Up for King of Gods: Yesterday Freida Pinto was announced as joining the cast of Tarsem Singh's War of the Gods as the oracle priestess Phaedra. Today, Rourke is reportedly up for the role of King Hyperion, the ruler of Ancient Greece who does battle with the divines. The film, as I mentioned yesterday, follows the battles waged by Theseus (Henry Cavill), a warrior from Greek mythology, who leads a fight against the imprisoned titans in a story where gods fight alongside mortals. Phaedra joins Theseus on his quest to prevent the cataclysmic war from erupting. The film begins shooting on April 7th, while the above announcement of Rourke's turn in Conan begins in late March. Depending on the size of the two roles he may have to choose between them. [Deadline]

I thought at the very least Brandon Routh should've been back for the next one. He did a great job considering the enormous shadow cast by the late C.Reeve. Most fanboys I know have no qualms about him donning the cape and were pleasantly surprised he turned out well. They'll probably get Josh Hartnett or some "name" actor for the role then.

Agreed! Routh should be given an opportunity to come back…but knowing WB it probably will be some "hotshot actor"

Routh was Superman. If they want to re-introduce Superman to the world in a different fashion (as opposed to Superman Returns which was pretty much the real Superman III or IV), that is fine. But Lex Luthor again? Really? Enough with him already. Were is Bizzaro? With him we would get a clone storyline, labs, etc, and some really good fights. But lots of character, sadness, etc. It would be great. But Brainiac is cool too. Hopefully this will kick off at least 2 sequels so they can do this.
With Nolan around and David Goyer working on it, it should be good. Hopefully they won't hire another moron to direct.

  2. Any captain america they cast will be terrible. But I can't wait to see the product if Chris Nolan's involved in the next Superman franchise.

I am a big Captain America fan so I would actually like to see Josh Hartnett play the role. Bradley Cooper is a decent choice for me as well.

Oh and BRING BACK BRANDON ROUTH!

  5. Alright, color me interested in the new Superman film.

David S. Goyer is a pretty goddamn solid writer, even if his directorial work leaves much to be desired.

Eh…I'm mixed about this one. Most of Goyer's good stuff has been because he had co-writer's (The Nolan's) that and Superman and Batman are two totally different movies and mythologies. When they tried to gt Tom Makeiwicz to write the original Batman back in the 80's, following the sucess he had with Donner's Superman, it couldn't get off the ground and it was fairly clear that he was not the right person for the job. As much as I like Nolan, I don't know if his sensibilities will fit well with the Man of Steele's universe. We'll just have to wait and see I guess.

As for Captain America I'm fine with them getting a complete unknown to do it. Personally, I thought Charlie Hunnam from "Children of Men," "Cold Mountain," and Sons of Anarachy" would've been a great choice for the role. I'm more interested in seeing who will play Red Skull actually. My first thought was Chrisotph Waltz but I think that for the more younger fair Tom Hardy could be a great fit.

Brad, can't you tell the idiots at Warner Brothers that everyone wants Brandon Routh back? We should start a petition!!!!

Daniel Craig could pull of Captain America. Yes I know he, in reality, is British and it is "Captain AMERICA." But he did a perfect american accent in Tomb Raider. His voice would certainly not be an issue. And he is a very good actor. Unfortunately I do not think he'd do it because 1/2 he time he's in something that can probably pass as an art film or else playing gritty James Bond. But they got Edward Norton to be Hulk, so who knows.
Even if someone hates this idea, they cannot be on board with Brad Pitt or Leonardo Dicaprio doing this. or Matthew Mcon-whatever either. All horrid choices; hopefully they were never serious about any of those.

    • Nah. This movie screams America is the best and go eff yourself foreigners. There's no way it would fly with American audiences to see a non-American [non-white] actor playing the Cap'n.

      • Someone misunderstood my comments to mean that I'm racist and tried to start a flame war, but Brad deleted those inflammatory comments. Thanks.

I just want to clarify. I do not think a black or any other Captain America would be a bad idea. In fact, I think Will Smith would've been great, but to the American audience and the comic book fanbase, it would not make that much sense. It's like asking a Japanese audience to embrace The Last Samurai starring Tom Cruise…wait a second. Plus, the Cap'n was created in the era of WWII and he looked like what America idolized (tall, white, blond, blue eyes).

America is mostly white (over 70% by the last census) and it is still having trouble adjusting to a mixed race President. And while it is a racist sentiment to question whether a non-white actor could play Captain America, regardless of my objection, it rings true and I don't think it would be considered as profitable to the studios. That is the bottom line. Money. If you can't sell it, they won't make it.

  9. The Jackal

@Brad Brevet: Question. Back in 2000, Gladiator won big at the box office and at the Academy Awards. As a result the studios began looking for ancient epics to greenlight (King Arthur, Troy, Kingdom of Heaven); however, now I'm confused. What started this whole craze for Greek Mythology? Percy Jackson, Clash of the Titans, War of the Gods…did I miss something?

Christmas came early for me this year. I was very disappointed when I learned that Bryan Singer wouldn't be making a comeback with "The Man of Steel"; personally, I felt he and Routh had done a fantastic job of resurrecting our favorite alien. Now, with news that Nolan is overseeing another reboot along with Goyer for the script, I'm ecstatic. Superman has always needed to make a comeback, hopefully this'll be the film to do it. I cannot wait. Big budget, great script, great actors (fingers crossed) will follow….at least I hope so.
