George Clooney Can't Even Beat a '21'
More box-office woes for Mr. Hollywood
Strangely enough it looks like George Clooney's box-office appeal is going to take another stab as Friday estimates now show 21 to be the likely weekend winner after it took in $5 million on Friday, besting Leatherheads by $.45 million, on its way to a second #1 weekend in a row.
Last year Clooney's draw came into question when Michael Clayton performed poorly at the box despite positive reviews. Now we have Leatherheads losing to the 31% rated 21 , not as if that is much worse than the 55% Leatherheads received. The question is whether or not this shoots to Clooney's draw or if the mere fact that Leatherheads didn't receive good reviews was the reason. You can't compare Clayton and Leatherheads based on the fact that one is a methodical thriller and the other is a '30s comedy spoof. I would be more apt to say the fact that a '30s homage is of interest to virtually no one and is the reason Leatherheads won't be doing so well.
Other new releases, Nim's Island came in Friday at #3 with $4.1 million, The Ruins scared its way to a #4 spot with a meager $2.7 million, while the Rolling Stones feature Shine a Light pissed itself and ended up at #12 with $610k.
The top five should pretty much stay the way it is although Fantasy Moguls predicts Horton Hears a Who will jump up one spot and take over the fifth slot moving The Ruins to #5.
Suffice to say, the box-office isn't looking good and won't look good until May 2 when Iron Man hits screens. It has been a rather bland year for films, let's hope summer gets things moving forward.
