Warner Bros. has brought online the Gangster Squad trailer, offering the first look at the late-'40s set crime thriller directed by Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland) and starring Josh Brolin, Ryan Gosling, Nick Nolte, Robert Patrick, Michael Pena, Giovanni Ribisi, Anthony Mackie, Emma Stone and Sean Penn.

Set in Los Angeles, 1949, Gangster Squad is based on Paul Lieberman's seven-part "Tales From the Gangster Squad" series centered on the Los Angeles Police Dept.'s struggle with increasing crime and corruption in the 1940s, when the department formed the Gangster Squad to keep East Coast organized crime figures from planting roots. At the center of it all is Mickey Cohen (Penn), a former boxer who became an associate of Meyer Lansky and Bugsy Siegel. While charismatic, he was also considered an ultra-violent sociopath.

The film is set to hit theaters later this year.

The trailer looks fun. I'm a complete sucker for noir like this or LA Confidential, which deals with the same story/villains/etc.

That poster though looks photoshopped as hell. It's like a screen capture of the video game LA Noire

  2. Driver says:

Looks absolutely awesome, I didnt knew it was going to be so action packed, at least that how the trailer its selling it.
    The trailer is great.

  3. steve-o says:

Sean Penn looks just like Marv from Sin City in this trailer. No point to this comment. Just Sayin'.

  4. AKD says:

I agree with the comment about the music, completely misplaced. Emma Stone looks entirely to young for this role. Someone older or at least someone who looks a bit older would have been better.

    • Poke says:

From the looks of their trailers, and from a completely hypothetical standpoint, I think that Gangster Squad will do bigger box office while Lawless will be the most critically acclaimed.

Gangster Squad looks a bit Untouchables 2.0

  5. MartD says:

Looks great. Terrific cast. I'll be first in line.

Heads up, Sunday brings Paramount Vantage's teaser trailer for "The Guilt Trip".

  6. Hank says:

Reminds me too much of Lawless. Emma Stone looks out of place compared to Jessica Chastain in Lawless.

  7. Emi says:

This movie looks like it's gonna be crap. Oh, this trailer is awful. It's trying so hard yet does so little. All flash and no substance.

  8. Wolfgang Hamilton says:

Who's bright idea was it to put a rap song in a trailer for a film set in the '40s?? Idiot.

  9. Dj says:

I've been looking forward to this movie since it's original announcement. But I hate movie trailers that use music from today in period pieces. It bugs me.

But besides that, I'll see it.

  10. Drew says:

I really want this movie to be awesome, but I'm not sold yet...probably because this trailer is so ridiculous. I'll still see it either way.
