'Friday the 13th' Remake Helmer Takes a Page from Stoker
Now this could be a really cool movie...
Marcus Nispel successfully went from directing music videos to feature films with his remake of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and his latest remake of Friday the 13th, which hits DVD and Blu-ray on June 16. Up next for the helmer appears to be The Last Voyage of Demeter for Phoenix Pictures.
The script, penned by Bragi Schut Jr., is based on a chapter in Bram Stoker's "Dracula" describing the arrival of the vampire count in England on a cargo ship that has crashed into the rocks at Whitby with no crew and the dead captain lashed to the steering wheel. Stoker tells the story via the captain's log of the voyage, which begins in Bulgaria and becomes increasingly disjointed as members of the crew disappear.
I don't want to get too excited about this, but I really like this idea. Just the fact of finding a way to bring to life a small piece of a much larger story appeals to me, that is if they manage to keep the Dracula portion of the story to a minimum. I am not sure how they could do that, but the idea of a mysterious killer in which the audience knows is Dracula, but it is never explicitly revealed inside the story seems incredibly interesting to me.
Phoenix Pictures producer Brad Fischer told Variety they are aiming to begin production this year.

Totally agree, it has got me interested as well.
Definitely not a fan of Nispel, but anything Dracula related necessitates keeping an eye on. Guess we'll see. His movies are certainly nice to look at, if nothing else.
Eh, the concept is absolutely great but with Nispel involved (and just knowing how hollywood works) I can already see them messing this up. They'll up the Dracula factor, make it extra gorey and market it to teenagers, basically everything they shouldn't do.
I'm so jaded by Hollywood at this point, I haven't seen a good American horror film in ages. If they actually stick to the book on this one I love it but I just don't see that happening.
