'Slumdog' x 2, One for 'Frost/Nixon' and another for 'The Dark Knight'

The Dark Knight has scored its third "Best of 2008" nod after the Austin Critics and African American Film Critics Assn. did the same. The Utah Film Critics Society name Batman the best film of the year giving Rachel Getting Married the runner-up spot. Detroit and Florida went the more traditional route and named Slumdog Millionaire while Las Vegas is the first (and likely the last) to name Frost/Nixon the best film of 2008.

Heath Ledger continues his streak of being named Best Supporting Actor by the critics, so much so that the Utah critics didn't even name a runner-up. Snap dragon! This is also the first time I have listed this many critic awards and Sean Penn didn't win a single Best Actor nod with Mickey Rourke (The Wrestler) pulling most of the weight winning three of the four with Frank Langella (Frost/Nixon) getting the nod from the Vegas critics.

On the lady's side Kate Winslet earns a couple of nods for Revolutionary Road and the folks in Las Vegas put her down for both Revolutionary Road and The Reader. In the supporting category Marisa Tomei faired very well winning three of the four spots for her performance in The Wrestler.

As for directors things were rather normal with Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire) taking two and Ron Howard another. However, the Utah folks once again went against the grain and gave it to Andrew Stanton for WALL•E. Go figure.

The complete list for each can be found over the course of the next four pages. Also, if you haven't weighed in on my WALL•E vs. The Dark Knight poll, click here and be sure your opinion is counted.

Las Vegas named their Lifetime Achievement Award after William Holden? That's Awesome!

Good to see Mickey Rourke gaining more ground, although I wonder if voters in the Academy will not vote for him, afraid that he'll be a mess at the ceremony.

Oh, and sorry about my previous comment on this article BB.

Brad @William: No need for an apology, you helped out. :)

Frost/Nixon chosen as best picture of '08?!

Awesome, i liked Frost/Nixon, i think it's underrated and should get more consideration.

It should def. get an Oscar nod for best picture.

Best Supporting Actor: Heath Ledger, The Dark Knight (no runner-up)

    Ha, right on!

Wow, Vegas sure loved them some Frost/Nixon. And I'm glad to see Andrew Stanton get at least one nod. I think animation directors don't get nearly enough credit. I bought a script of Finding Nemo autographed by most of the actors, which was pretty cool, but opening it to see that Andrew Stanton had signed the title page really made me geek out. His passion at Comic-Con as he presented WALL-E was palpable, and you could tell he really cared about the story. He's a big part of the core of Pixar (I think he was something like the fourth guy hired when it was still part of Lucasfilm) and deserves the recognition.

God does Kate winslet have to get nominated just for releasing a new film. She's a good actress but how many nominations does she have now!!

Hope Heath wins he deserves it.

Good for Martin Mcdonagh he is very talented. Colin Farrell and Brendan gleeson deserve their golden globe nom too.
