victorbunch asked what I thought of Michael Mann in the I Am Legend review thread (http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/forum/showthread.php?t=833&page=2) and I thought better to start a new thread instead of going off topic in another.

Personally I love Michael Mann's work and don't think he make enough movies. I love Last of the Mohicans, Heat, Ali and Collateral is probably one of my top ten movies of all time. I will admit Miami Vice was pretty much terrible outside of the one shoot out in the trailer park, but I am really looking forward to seeing his next flick Public Enemies with Johnny Depp as Dillinger.

Anyone else have an opinion?

It's funny, my husband and I always tell people that our favorite director is Michael Mann and they inevitably look at you like you have two heads. Not many people ever think of him until you start naming some of the movies he's done and then they get it. He just doesn't make that many movies and I wish he did. I love his whole style of filming. All of the movies you mention are fabulous and might I add a couple more of my favorites? How about The Insider and Thief (a real early one of his). He always has interesting & cool sound tracks to his movies too.

I about fell out of my chair when I saw that he's teaming up with Johnny Depp & possibly Christian Bale for a movie about the 30's crime wave. I can't wait for that one. It will definitely be on my watch list! He doesn't make a whole lot of movies but it's usually always worth the wait!
