A couple of things. First, I went to see it precisely because it was a political movie... so maybe there are a few ones of my sort. And second, I believe that the movie conveys exactly the most striking thing about America...nobody sees an alternative and the few idealists who try to do something, rotundly fail (as the students who enrol). See the final scene... contrast the news bar telling about Afghanistan with the broadcaster. What are most youth interested in? Making money... for what? to feed corporate America, not themselves. The saddest thing about the war is that so very few cares about what it's doing to the country or to the entire world.
Why the drugs, the lust, the expending? Because there is no longer a meaningful alternative.
