I went to see Guess Who because of the chick I was with at the time. I grudgingly went because I did not like Ashton Kutcher (she did), and I held no hope for the movie. It was after all...Ashton Kutcher. Surprise! I rather enjoyed the flick. Let me say this first. There are no surprises here. Guess Who is a ""remake"" of Guess Who's Coming To Dinner. Only, the roles are reversed here. Kutcher is taken home by his black girlfriend, Zoe Saldana, to meet her parents. There are the usual white-black jokes, the parents against the white boyfriend being with their daughter...well, you get the idea. I bet you can even guess the ending. It is that predictable. What makes this flick enjoyable are the performances by Bernie Mac and Ashton Kutcher. They are truly hilarious without going over the top, relaxed in their roles, and give effective performances. Mac is believable as a dad who would subject any guy - black or white - to the intense scrutiny befitting someone who intends to date his daughter. He shows love, sympathy and even understanding for both his daughter and Kutcher. Kutcher is the surprise. I have seen him in That 70's Show and the awful Dude, Where Is My Car. I expected the dope. Here, Kutcher is acceptable. He, like Mac, is sympathetic to events unfolding around him. His desire to truly have Saldana as his wife is touching. Nicely done, Mr. Kutcher. I give this flick a C+ because it skirted the black-white issue. Unlike the original, when such an issue comes up, it is either given the TV treatment, or it is made to disappear quickly. Shame on the director and writers for not dealing with this and making a safe flick instead. Overall, a fun film. However, one that is easily forgotten when you leave the cinema.
