Just above is your first look at Meryl Streep in the upcoming adaptation of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's musical Into the Woods directed by Rob Marshall (Chicago, Nine).

The film is described as a modern twist on the beloved Brothers Grimm fairy tales, intertwining the plots of a few choice stories and exploring the consequences of the characters' wishes and quests. This humorous and heartfelt musical follows the classic tales of Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, and Rapunzel—all tied together by an original story involving a baker and his wife, their wish to begin a family and their interaction with the witch who has put a curse on them.

All of these characters are connected by The Witch's (Streep) powers with Johnny Depp playing the Wolf, Anna Kendrick as Cinderella, Chris Pine as Cinderella's Prince, James Corden as the Baker, Emily Blunt as the Baker's Wife, Lilla Crawford as Little Red Riding Hood, Daniel Huttlestone (Les Misérables) as Jack, Tracey Ullman as Jack's mother and Christine Baranski as the infamous Stepmother.

The film is currently slated to hit theaters on Christmas Day 2014.

Into the Woods is one of my favorite musicals. It will probably depart somewhat from the stage version, but this cast looks pretty good to me, definitely one I am anticipating.

I'm a fan too. I read the script-in all honesty, the movie is pretty close, but there are some changes (some that could be called drastic depending on who you ask)

I have seen and helped on productions of this musical. One of the songs is one of my top ten favorite songs from a musical ever. And I have read the movie script. Knowing everything about to go down with this film, allow me to say:

Please God let this be good.

I really hope this film is great. I hold 'Into The Woods' in such high regard, and I hope they don't screw it up. I know they've cut some VERY key characters, which is troublesome, but I hope it pans out.

She looks great. A little like Carol Kane in The Princess Bride though. I still kind of regret they didn't cast someone like Audra MacDonald who has a magnificent voice. Streep's singing is serviceable. In musicals, I wish they would go with people who can really really sing. It's Chris Pine that makes me roll my eyes though. Unless he has an unexpectedly terrific voice, why oh why?

I hope for the best too.

    She looks normal.

While I have interest, I hope this isn't going to be like Hansel And Gretel: Witch Hunters. While I enjoyed that film, and I know this musical came long b4, I just hope it is very different so it doesn't come off to the general public like a rip-off or second string. In any case I'll either see it theatres or buy the DVD 90% guaranteed on the premise alone (would like to see a trailer).
