Sony has released the following first official image of Andrew Garfield (The Social Network) as Spider-Man in the upcoming, as yet, Untitled Spider-Man Reboot directed by Marc Webb (500 Days of Summer) and co-starring Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Martin Sheen, Sally Field, Denis Leary, Irrfan Khan, Campbell Scott, Annie Parisse, Julianne Nicholson and C. Thomas Howell.

The film is currently set for a July 3, 2012 release date.

Any thoughts on this new look?

He looks like a kid on Halloween who didn't get any treats.

  2. Colin

Hope to see this boy and this frnachise go leaps and bounds furhter than the original did.

  3. Dave

    Looks great!

i only saw Garfield in Social Network and Boy A. In both his character was somewhat shy so i think he'll pull off the "geek" aspect of peter parker pretty well… i just hope he brings an element of badass that tobey maguire didnt

Anyone who thinks he looks like a boy in a costume, go read a Spider-Man comic. Peter Parker doesn't get all built just because a spider bit him (like in the first movie). This is what Spider-Man looks like in costume.

This is a solid first pic.

    • Winchester

      Yeah, like I care.

Just sayin, do a little research before whining over one released pic.

      • Winchester

@Roger – it has nothing to do with seeking a 'built' Peter Parker.

If you don't want to get upset by people's reponses you maybe shouldn't assume for them why they made their response.

        Just sayin.

The image is nothing spectacular, Garfield's build or Peter Parker's supposed 'meant to be' build is irrelevant to that.

      • Roger

I just find it odd that he looks exactly how he's supposed to look. I don't get your point.

      • Winchester

He looks about ten is my point.

It's not an important point, it's not a point that has any bearing on the quality of the film or the performance of Garfield.

But seeing the picture – that was my first thought.

      Roger,

That is NOT what Spider-Man looks like in the comic. The costume is wrong. What's with those gloves? Aside from the eyes, the original trilogy costume hit it out of the ballpark.

As far as the webshooters go, Sam Raimi had the right idea; he stated that for more "realism", how could a high school geek, no matter how smart, come up with those webshooters? The organics may not have been Marvel gospel, but they made more sense.

I meant because it's not some beefed up guy in a suit. Spider-Man never looked like how Tobey Maguire was in his suit. Spider-Man looks scrawny but can kick serious ass and I find this pic is shows it.

Spidey was traditionally drawn as pretty buff. Hell, check out the cover to Amazing Fantasy 15 which is the original appearance of the character as a High School student. He looks a lot more like Tobey Maguire's build than what we see above.

I gather that the Ultimate Spider-Man comic from recent years has drawn a much more scrawny Spider-Man, but that's not what the vast majority of fans are familiar with.

I thought I read somewhere that they are going towards the Ultimate Spider-Man universe though, so in that case, this would all make sense no?

Yes I agree, this guy, in comparison to the Spiderman from the comic books, as drawn by various artists, looks way too scrawny (in this one picture). Tobey Maguire did have a more fitting build imo.

But that wont effect my opinion of the film either way.

this reboot just keeps Looking good…

  7. Mason Williamson

Everything except the fact that this is being released in 3D is looking excellent. So I suppose if I see it in 2D, there should be no problems.

  8. Dim McRemnant

I am a huge stickler for costuming in comic book movies. The costume is almost like a character. And yeah… They got this wrong.

  9. ben

As much as i hate the idea of a new Spiderman origin film, i hope they do well. It has all the right ingredients. I found the first 3 films a little too goofy and they tried too hard to be funny (remember the asian lady with the violin in the subway?).

  10. Arjuna

loving the costume and the MECHANICAL WEB SHOOTERS!!!!! (there are little metal disks on his wrist if you look closely!) that alone makes this better than the original trilogy, people can say the change in costume is a step backwards but the addition of web shooters (like in the original comics) is leaps forwards!

  11. Paes

Looks like a kid with a trashed down homemade costume.
I don't understand the negativity. Peter Parker doesn't have any money, he may be smart but would never have the resources to pull of a "batman-esque" type of costume – specially considering this is Peter Parket in high school.
It's a more realistic look. Like the first costume Peter Parker uses in the first movie – sweatpants and stuff.

  12. Tryler

    Costume sucks

  13. Lewis

andrew garfield's a puny actor. needs to bulk up. as for the pic, I agree with the first post. he looks like a kid on halloween who didn't get any treats!

  14. Kelly

Geeeeez, there are already one too many unwarranted, harsh comments. I think the suit/still looks most excellent. I'm incredibly excited.

  15. AJ

Not a big fan of the redesigned look. The mask will be the big deciding factor.

  16. Leandro Dubost

Ok. I think it looks better than the original suit, that felt nothing at all like a costume a kid would make at home. This is a bit more natural, just a little bit.

I feel too much hate coming from fans towards this movie. I don't know why. I'm not a fan of rebooting a franchise after just 10 years, but come on… Give them a chance! Say it sucks if it sucks, but wait for it to suck at least!!

It's not like Sam Raimi made us eager to see his Spider-Man 4 after that travesty he did with his third movie! Really, after how that trilogy ended, I'm glad they're changing everything – I'm just not ok with telling the origin AGAIN, but whatever.

  17. Alex L.

Everybody hush. We can't jump to conclusions already. The suit isn't in movement. We haven't seen what Andrew Garfield will be doing with the title role. They have an oscar-winning writer working on the script and a very promising director who knows how to bring the best out of his actors as exemplified in (500) Days of Summer. The cast lineup looks terrific and I can't find a single completely horrible ingredient in this new awesome looking concoction. But in the end, it shouldn't matter because we are film fans and that's why we come to this site. If you are going to criticize based on your fanboy opinions towards the sanctity of the original trilogy and how everything NEEDS to be a perfect translation of the comic book then you should be on comicbookmovie.com or annoying IMDB forums. Coming to a film news website exclaiming how it's not like the comic book is BS and it just makes you a troll.

  18. david mikula

dammnn. looks sick. andrew garfield is the shit.

  19. Daniel Wolfe

It does not look like the costume from the comics at all but I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing. Change is what it's about. If you want to see a more accurate costume watch Raimi's Trilogy. But with Marc Webb directing and Andrew Garfield staring a botched costume wouldn't stop me from wanting to see this flick. That said I think it looks very cool. Much more gritty. Like spidey meets kick-ass. Pretty excited to see where this will go.

  20. ryan

Just forget it sony! The last three were alot of fun without changing it already!

  21. DC

The thing is there were different Spider-Man series of comics with a ton of different suits. That suit most resembles the Ben Reilly Spider-Man outfit from a series called House of M according to IGN

  22. Nice suit… Good start for Spiderman 2.0

  23. Brackam

Love Garfield as Peter Parker, and the suit is looking great. I do think it might be better with the red belt on the front, but even without I love the look and feel of this image. I think Sony is doing this right.

  24. MajorFilmFan

YES!!!!!!! I loved Garfield in the Social Network, and I REALLY hope he can pull off action hero.

  25. Philip

The best thing that happened this week…seeing this photo of the new reboot.
I'm so rooting for Garfield's success since seeing Boy A. very fine acting.
…funny that she's gonna be paired with miss Easy A. ;)

  26. Rayzr1978

At least it isn't the "Scarlet-Spider" suit. And when the heck are we gonna see Carnage?!?!? I'm not a huge fan of reboots unless the story needs it. We just finished the "Spidey-Prime" (original universe). That one was the most familiar of the storylines. However, as stated earlier, there are many universes in which Spider-Man exists, it's time to tell the story of the next Spidey Universe over.
