Fox Searchlight sent out some information and a first look photo of their upcoming film The East, which is set to play the Sundance Film Festival next month.
The film, written by Sound of My Voice duo Zal Batmanglij and Brit Marling centers on a character named Sarah Moss (Marling), a brilliant operative for an elite private intelligence firm whose top objective is to ruthlessly protect the interests of their A-list corporate clientele. She is assigned to go undercover to infiltrate an anarchist collective known for executing covert attacks upon major corporations. Living amongst them in an effort to get closer to their members, Sarah finds herself unexpectedly torn between two worlds as she starts to fall in love with the group's charismatic leader, finding her life and her priorities irrevocably changed.
Along with Marling the film co-stars Alexander SkarsgÄrd, Ellen Page, Toby Kebbell, Shiloh Fernandez and Patricia Clarkson and will be released some time after its Sundance debut with its premiere set for January 20.
If you haven't seen Sound of My Voice yet I would definitely recommend giving it a look. You can read my review here.
Sounds like she wanted to play the other role in Sound of My Voice so she wrote another similar movie and now can play the other role.
I liked Another Earth's character moments and think Brit Marling is a good actress, but the ending of Sound of My Voice left a sour taste in my mouth and now I can't help but think of Marling as "that actress that writes Sundance-y genre movies for herself to star in."
Not counting this new one out at all, but I'm just a little skeptical.
I saw an interview with marling and the director guy where they explained that they actually wrote The East BEFORE Sound of My Voice, so if anything this one is the "original".
I really liked SOMV despite its flaws because I thought it showed a lot of potential for future works, so I'm excited to see how things evolve with this new one. Good cast as well.
I'm with you on SOMV. Something about Marling that turns me off.
I appriciated 'Another Earth' for it's character aspects. The moments with the characters, particuarly Marling's were very lovely. I like Marling, but I think that she writes Sundance-y movies. I'd like to see her do more mainstream movies.
Glad to see Ellen again! It's been a while!
I agree! I've missed her charm and quirkiness on screen.
Patricia Clarkson enters the movie "The East" because it can only be good ;)
Shiloh fernandez. !!!!
