First Look at the Characters and Concept Art of Tim Burton's 'Alice in Wonderland'
Surprisingly... it's a little creepy

USA Today has gotten their hands on an impressive array of concept art and character images from Tim Burton's upcoming Disney feature Alice in Wonderland, which is due in theaters on March 5, 2010.
As you can see from above the early photo of Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter that leaked online was dead on accurate, but the coloring is much, much different in this official image, although I am not sure if the effect of the photo has really changed that much. We also get a peek at Helena Bonham Carter as the Red Queen and Anne Hathaway as the White Queen, all three photos can be seen in much larger versions over at USA Today.
Moving on we come to three separate pieces of concept art. The screen captures I have taken and added below are smaller versions than what is available at USA Today, although you can click on each image for the largest clean copy I could manage. The USA Today feature is a Flash based feature allowing you to zoom in and out all while scrolling around the image for a better look. Considering the size of the images and the detail this is a pretty cool feature I recommend you check out right here.

Alice in Wonderland is based on the Lewis Carroll classic and will combine performance-capture with live-action and while be shown in theaters in 3-D. Starring as Alice is Mia Wasikowska whom producer Richard Zanuck describes at USA Today saying, "There is something real, honest and sincere about her. She's not a typical Hollywood starlet." As for Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter in his seventh role for Tim Burton Zanuck simply says, "This character is off his rocker. He is so much fun and so nutty, I can't imagine anyone else doing it."

Wow…Depp looks really creepy. In a good way though. I really hope the substance can match the style of the movie.
I'm not seeing creepy…
I DO see Burton though!
I expect this to be failry off center because of who is behind the lens. It looks like I have nothing to fear on that front.
it looks stunning.. Alice in wonderland was always too creepy for my choice of bedtime read… and only burton could have envisioned it in such a stunning way… the colours jump of the images and seem to have a life of their own… i hope this movie has a creepy cooky cartoonish almost pupett-y feel to it
i love the pics and the art work
These images remind me of the excellent 'American McGee's Alice' video game which was supposed to have a movie based on it starring Sarah Michelle Gellar as a demented, adult Alice adventuring in a dark version of Wonderland but that movie got shelved later on. Anybody heard of that game? Seems like Burton is going for the same creepy, crazy and grim atmosphere for this movie as well.
Legions of people who are afraid of clowns will stay away from this one. Depp's makeup is eerily reminiscent of the main character in "It", or maybe it's his demeanor. And does Depp have green eyes? Alot of color correction in the editing I'm guessing.
This movie will be epic!!! Depp looks amazing
i have a feeling this might be a huge box office break through. Everyone will probably see this flick next spring.
Brilliant!!! Burton again shows his extensive artist side with his genious director skills.
@Patricia: ever heard of colored contacts?
@ana: Tsk, tsk, such condescension. I think I referenced color correction editing which is likely what we are looking at here, although it is possible he was required to wear contacts. Maybe both.
I want to add that Tim Burton's capable, imaginative mind and hands are the only ones in which I would entrust this bizarre tale. I look forward to seeing how he's brought this to life and taken it away from its previous Disney interpertation.
Anybody else think they ripped off the 'Big Love' portrait posters? Same background, lighting, etc
