USA Today has just revealed a first look at Russell Crowe as Robin Hood in the Ridley Scott directed Robin Hood, which is currently filming and set to be released by Universal on May 14, 2010.

In the pic, Crowe looks a lot like his Gladiator alter-ego Maximus, but as producer Brian Grazer says, "He doesn't have the old Robin Hood tights. He's got armor. He's very medieval. He looks, if anything, more like he did in Gladiator than anything we're used to seeing with Robin Hood."

Grazer also adds an interesting note saying, "Oddly, it's a metaphor for today. He's trying to create equality in a world where there are a lot of injustices. He's a crusader for the people, trying to reclaim some of the ill-gotten gains of the wealthy. That's a universal theme."

Check out the pic below and weigh in with your thoughts.

    NICE!!!!

  2. VERY NICE! I knew he would look magnificent in this and, from this first picture, I am in no way disappointed!

Well, I am relieved. I never liked the men in tights look and doubt it was historically correct, either. Russell looks very good, but I must add, a little old for the part?

  4. adu

Yeah other than looking a bit old for the part, I think the look looks rather good :)

  5. Atonia

This is a totally new Robin Hood and I think he looks wonderful. Can't wait for this one to come out.

  6. Luminella

    OH MY!!!!

  7. Anne

ABSOLUTELY love it, masculine and outdoorsy as I'M sure Robin Hood must have been. Can't wait to see this one. Too old for the part? I don't think so!!!!!!!!

  8. If this is old, give me old any day! I'm 25 and I'd give anything if the 45-year-old men where I live looked like this!

Seriously, though… I think he looks just right for this part. Russell will bring something to it that no other actor ever has.

  9. Nathan

He looks the best Robin hood has ever looked. I wouldnt mind wearing that myself!!

Well Robin From the story never had a set age, the young man in green tights image is due to the Holywood sensibilities. So I think this look is more than appropriate for what Sir Ridley's going for. Which is realism and as close to history as possible (at least the historical setting, cause the existence of Robin Hood as a historical figure was never proven).

Well, back then most people only lived to about 30 or 40 at the oldest depending on class and wealth (which kinda go together) so this is in no way realistic. I'm not saying that it was a bad casting choice or anything, just saying that he is too old if you're trying to be historically correct. But he still is one of the best actors for the role.

Wow, this looks really, really nice.

Fantastic !!! Crowe looks accurate to the medieval period, which other Robin Hood films and TV shows of the past never did, [except maybe the Sean Connery film which featured a much older Robin and Marion]…. Love those sexy boots.

The whole Robin Hood myth grew and changed over 800 years of embellishment. He may never have been one actual person, and his "adventures" were surely just stories and fictions, but the legend persists because of the theme, and I can't wait see Crowe and Scott's film.

  14. With a stellar cast led by Crowe and a director like Ridley Scott, this is really one to look forward to.

He looks wonderful! If there really was a Robin Hood, I would doubt that he would have worn tights or perfect clothes of any kind. Only the very wealthy had fancy clothes. Most people in those days were happy if they had rags to keep them warm. Living in the woods, hiding out, taking little of the "booty" for himself… no, he would be wearing clothes that were worn, possibly thread-bare but necessary for the life style. I think this is more authentic.
As for Russell’s age: He played a middle-aged man when he was in his early 30’s. He played John Nash as a young man through old age! He can certainly play a Robin Hood for whom we have no age for anyway!
However, I will say that cutting his hair takes at least 10 years off! Beautiful!

    hott

This is probably more what Robin Hood would have looked like and would have worn anyway. I've always been a fan of Hood and now am even more of a fan. Can't wait!

I think Russell Crowe looks amazing, and by the way everything about him is sexy including his courage to face the swarm of foul dirty press who thrive on lies and neglect to reveal the real heart behind our wonderful actor!

    I just got a SEMI.

  22. catherine

ha ha, it is maximus with a bow & arrow. but he is amazing… incredible, to see him go from scholarly beautiful mind, to smarmy body of lies, to SOOO manly Robin hood. crowe is all man, and yeah, i agree he is freaking amazing for his age.

  23. he looks freakin awesome

  24. Rebecca

Robin Hood is one of my favorite legends/stories. My favorite all time Robin Hood was Prince of Thieves with Kevin Costner even though he didn't have an english accent. It was by far an amazing movie. It will be interesting to see Russel Crowe in this part.

  25. Christi Spivey

Grand!!!!!!!!!! Rid and Russ, together again!

  26. muriel

I agree. Russell will bring a whole lot of authenticity to the role. Who says Robin Hood had to be all that young anyway.

    RC looks great!
