Nicolas Winding Refn made a name for himself with the Pusher trilogy and looks to be doing himself one better on the festival circuit with Bronson, the true life story of British prisoner Charles Bronson (not the actor), which was picked up by Magnet Releasing and will hit the States on October 9. The film has received a lot of attention and a recently released trailer which can be seen at Hulu.
However, next up for Refn is Valhalla Rising and it will be premiering at the Venice Film Festival this September and we have your first look at star Mads Mikkelsen (Casino Royale) as Harald as well as a second still from the film which can be seen in our gallery right here.
In Valhalla Rising Mikkelsen plays the mute slave Harald who escapes his Scottish masters with the help of 10-year-old Are, torturing and killing them before joining a band of dispossessed Vikings. They go to sea, determined to return to Scandinavia to fight the spread of Christianity, but for Harald the journey is also a personal one to discover his own origins. Caught in a terrible storm, the group drift for 40 days until, on the verge of death, they find themselves in a freshwater river. The land seems at once strange yet familiar.
The film also stars Alexander Morton and Stewart Porter with Maarten Steven starring as Are. You can get the complete synopsis by clicking here and browse the two images right here.
Valhalla Rising does not have a release date or distributor.

Charles Bronson was the original performance artist who labeled himself Britian's most violent prisoner and made sure he lived up to it. Chaos was his art form. By the way, he renamed himself after the actor, another of his conceits. I've heard good hype for this film and the trailer only increases my interest.
As for "Valhalla Rising," this looks interesting also. (What a name: Mads.) A bit of fantasy, action and man candy too. What can I lose?
Nicolas Winding Refn, following in Tarantino's footprints? Maybe. But I don't think he'll be spitting on people at premieres.
Hi Patricia. Where did you get the trailer for Bronson? I would like to see it.
@Gilmore: Well, there's versions all over the place. But this is the best one I think:
