Universal has released the first trailer for Lone Survivor, the upcoming true life thriller starring Mark Wahlberg as one of four Navy SEALs on an ill-fated covert mission to neutralize a high-level Taliban operative who are ambushed by enemy forces in the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan. Peter Berg (The Kingdom) directs with Taylor Kitsch, Emile Hirsch, Ben Foster and Eric Bana co-starring.

The film is slated for a limited December 27 release as it will take a stab at Oscar consideration and then will go wide on January 10, 2014.

I've included the trailer and poster directly below and the batch of pictures is on the second page.

Not feeling this one, looks like 'Act of Valor' with a bigger budget.

You've pretty much nailed it, seems like generic actioner over award winner.

Very meh on this one. The trailer looked fine but for a film that is supposedly very brutal, it looks very sentimental and honestly kind of boring.

I think it looks good, but it doesn't really look like an Oscar contender.

I second that. Also I think Taylor Kitsch is better than his last few movies would lead you to believe. And Mark Wahlberg is a solid actor, but not Oscar worthy. I think I'll have fun watching this one.

why do they all seem to have the exact same beard in the pictures?

      Respect the beard :)

"The Beard, The Beard" altogether now brothers and sisters

I'm sorry, is no one else bothered by the fact that this film seemed to imply that it would have been better to kill those kids? I mean, I was excited about this (although it isn't Oscar-y), but the whole "Let's let them go, and one decision will change your life" seemed to imply that had they killed those kids, it would have been the right thing?

I don't think that was the point of the movie. It was just a poorly edited trailer.

Have you read the book? It looks like they have changed it a little but it is a huge decision that changed lives.

So far, I haven't been impressed with Berg's Armed Forces films. The Kingdom, Battleship, and now this? I was hoping for more of a Black Hawk Down or Zero Dark Thirty (the last 45 minutes anyway) vibe from this trailer. No expectations for this one.

    Thems the facts

i was a bit meh going in but i actually liked most of the trailer, the script came across pretty solid plus it's good to see Wahlberg play something other than "everyman" or comedy

    Rental maybe.

I think I'm the only person who likes this film's chances come award season. I think a lot of it will depend on exactly how much of the story they tell. Because in the trailer, they didn't show anything about him hiding from the Taliban in the villages. So that could be key.
