Blah, blah, blah... David O. Russell is done

Sorry folks, I just have no real interest in David O. Russell or his high-brow features such as the craptacular I Heart Huckabees. However, I will give him props for casting Tracy Morgan in his new romantic comedy Nailed along with the likes of James Marsden and Catherine Keener who all join the previously cast Jake Gyllenhaal and Jessica Biel.

In the film Biel will play Sammy Joyce, a socially awkward small-town receptionist who has a nail accidentally shot into her head by a clumsy workman, eliciting wild sexual urges. The uninsured Joyce goes on a crusade to Washington to fight for the rights of the bizarrely injured. She meets an immoral congressman (Gyllenhaal) who takes advantage of her sex drive and capitalizes on her crusade as Joyce heads into her own career in politics.

Marsden will play small-town the boyfriend of Biel's character Alice, a naive waitress who gets a nail shot into her head, causing erratic and outrageous behavior. She heads to Washington to fight for better health care and ends up falling for a clueless new congressman (Gyllenhaal) who must summon the political courage to save her.

Keener will play a self-serving Congresswoman. The filmmakers are finalizing details on Morgan's character, who will likely be an injured compatriot of Alice's who has given up on love.

The pic sounds like it has its charms, but Russell will find a way to "quirk" it up, and not the Facebook-accepted Diablo Cody style "quirk".

The film is now in preproduction in South Carolina, with principal photography set to begin April 14.

Sure, 'I Heart Huckabees' was mostly unwatchable, but can that be said of his previous studio films, 'Three Kings' and 'Flirting with Disaster'? 'Huckabees' was meant as an experiment, and it failed, but at least he got it out of his system. Now here's hoping he can get back to what he was doing before (and, I imagine, blowing up on set some more).

  2. You know, I need to revisit Three Kings again because so many people seem to love that movie, but I never felt anything for it.

  3. Spanking the Monkey is also pretty close to perfect. For a debut, it was pretty much a homerun.

But Three Kings is a borderline masterpiece. You definitely need to check it out again. Films don't get much better, and that one is definitely one of the reasons 1999 is considered such a magnificent year.
