Question: What
are your encounters like with the fans?
Jewel Staite: We've been doing these science
fiction conventions. It's been really interesting.
Adam Baldwin: They've been so supportive,
we have this underdog mentality. I know the DVD sales
were important to Universal's decision. We very much
appreciate how much the fans have helped with our
return to the screen.
Jewel: We wouldn't be here if we didn't
have such an amazing following.
Summer Glau: They sing our songs!
Jewel: They quote our lines; I don't
even know my lines.
Sean Maher: This summer there were a bunch
of secret screenings with fans that we all attended.
Watching the movies with fans is an experience, they're
incredibly loyal and it's flattering.
Jewel: They're smart too.
Adam: They're smart but you also get this
huge cross-section. Young and old, men and women.
They love the writing, they love the characters,
and they love the show. I remember Joss saying he
was utilizing the fuel of love, not the fuel of anger.
Anger is not an efficient fuel, love is. The love
we get for the show is seen in the energy you see
when you watch the show.
Question: Do
you ever take advice from fans on character development?
Joss Whedon: They seldom will actually pitch
things at me. I use the fans as a barometer of what
they are responding to, they aren't responding to
this character, let's open them up and see what makes
them tick. Stuff like that.
Question: The
zeal your fans show seems like Lord of the Rings or Star
Wars. What is it about this show or this movie
that fans are drawn to?
Nathan Fillion: The same reason I am, I'm
drawn to the people, these characters. I'm invested
in these people, they're flawed, and they're not
all perfect, well except for Malcolm Reynolds.
Morena Baccarin: You can relate to something
in each of the characters. I've been watching the
shows recently, you guys were great by the way, what
draws you to it again and again is they are stories
you want to be told, they are not just relative to
that universe. The style of Joss' writing is so grand
and stylized, sort of Shakespearian. These people's
plight is extremely accessible; I think that's what
draws me.
Gina Torres: Unlike Star Wars or The
Matrix trilogies where you have a very heightened
reality and black and white is very clear, the
lines are very definitively drawn. You fall into
it; you want to aspire to the grandness of these
heroes that are put in front of you. We're just
regular people in extraordinary circumstances and
that can be more inspiring. You think if these
people as jacked up as they are, with all their
issues, can meet these tasks and survive them then
I can too. We all go about it differently so there
is always an opportunity to see yourself.
Nathan: And they are each discovering things
about themselves that they didn't know were there,
that's interesting to watch. You're discovering Malcolm
Reynolds has a vulnerable side. I don't have much
in common with Jedi knights.
Question: Can
you picture yourself doing conventions in twenty
years?
Nathan: I find Serenity fans to be
pretty thoughtful, pretty intelligent. The fans are
really wonderful. We all have one thing in common;
we're all in love with the same show. If they think
they're fans they got nothing on me. I'm a fan.
Adam: I just want to say thank you to all
the fans. This is a labor of love for us and they've
always taken the time to show us how much they love
the work and it means a lot to all of us.
