The
movie is called
Domino and
it is about an actor's daughter turned bounty hunter.
People have their arms blown off with shotguns, people
are consistently left for dead, lap dances and sex scenes
are seen and even a bit with Jerry Springer. So how in
the hell does "Beverly Hills 90210" fit into all of this?
Well, let's just say someone needs to be the whipping
boy and who better than Brian Austin Green and Ian Ziering,
a.k.a. David and Steve from "Nine-Oh."
For the ribbing these two must get from their television
past and also their decision to take roles in a major
feature film and make fun of themselves and the show
that made them famous takes some serious balls. Then
again, I am sure the pay day ain't too bad.
"It was fun, that's what made it bearable and enjoyable
to do," said Green. "If I was there trying to maintain
my integrity from '90210' it would have been absurd,
the show was what it was so let's laugh about it
a little bit. Let's have fun."
Ian Ziering had no qualms either about poking fun
at his past, "I was actually looking forward to that.
To be a part of a television series that reaches
pop icon status is one thing, but to be able to go
back and poke fun at not just myself but the show
helps me put it to rest and distance myself from
it. It establishes an independence, which is something
that I was happy to do."
When
I say these two are the whipping boys in the film
that is no joke as they play hosts of the reality
TV series "Bounty Squad" featuring Ed, Choco and
Domino for producer Mark Heiss (Christopher
Walken). The boys consistently find themselves
in situations far out of their element, but when
asked whether or not they ever felt the need to be
part of the massacre and pick up a gun they seemed
to stick close to character.
"I think, given what was happening, the response
was really natural," Ian said, "there wasn't an opportunity
for myself or Brian to be gung-ho and on top of that
it wasn't written that way."
Green added, "No, no, because that seemed like
the obvious choice. Like, yeah, we become the bad
asses and we help the bounty hunters. We left it
with us as the sissy celebrities that just wanna
haul ass out of the hotel as soon as they let us
go. It's much more interesting."
You have to wonder just how exactly you prepare
to play a fictionalized version of yourself. While
the character has your name, likeness and background,
the situations you are placed in aren't your own,
so how do you prepare?
Brian said, "I kind of went into it looking to
entertain two groups of people, the ones that really
liked '90210', and were fans and wanted to see us
again; and then the guys on the street when I'm like
getting a coffee or something that can't help but
pull up and go, 'Dude, fucking '90210' sucked man!
I fucking hate you man.' [laughing] So I sort
of went into it thinking this is really great, the
people that have wanted to see me get to see me and
that's all good, but that guy, 'Fuck you!' gets to
watch Keira break my nose and I get the shit kicked
out of me through the whole thing, it's entertaining
for him."
Ian and Brian aren't exactly the most sought after
celebrities since "90210" ended, but that doesn't
mean they don't have things going on, and things
they are turning down for that matter. Ian tells
us he has an independent feature coming soon as well
as a script he is writing based on an email (yeah,
an email). Meanwhile Brian admits there are some
things he is working on and certainly some things
he is turning down.
Green will be starring opposite Freddie Prinze
Jr. this fall in the ABC pilot "Freddie," which airs
every Wednesday night at 8:30, but when asked if
he had ever considered such a show as "The Surreal
Life" he couldn't help but smile.
"Man,
they call every year. [laughing] Every year
the "Surreal Life" calls and they say, 'Oh it's going
to be different this year, it's gonna be such a good
show!' No it's not," he said. "It's sort of the running
joke and they call my manager and say, 'We're just
calling again to see if he's in a different place
or anything.' Nope."
For those of you dying for a "90210" question I
did manage to fit one in, but you might not like
the answer. Seeing how every TV show ever seems to
be on DVD it is a complete mystery as to why "90210" has
not yet been released. Well, there is good reason
as Brian gives us news he heard from a guy who heard
it from a bird who knew someone that probably knows
something.
"From what I have heard is that the licensing on
the show is a problem. We had so many people musically
coming on the show and performing and so much music
on the show that licensing wise it is a bit of a
disaster."
Unfortunately fans, it looks like you will have
to wait a little longer to see Steve and David again,
as for Brian and Ian they are only a movie ticket
away.
