Summer 2007 is undoubtedly the summer of the sequel. Out of the 45 movies I am previewing this year 14 of those are sequels, and these aren't your average run-of-the-mill sequels, these are some major players. Movies such as Spider-Man 3, which kicks off the summer up to Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and Rush Hour 3 closing out the four month madness. Throughout this preview you will see all the sequels denoted with an icon similar to the one to the right, just so you know where you are in the sequel count. If you are wondering if all these sequels matter, perhaps they don't to you, but let's take a look at how all this looks to the studios.

Of the 14 sequels coming out this summer, 10 of their predecessors grossed over $100 million, six of their predecessors grossed over $200 million, three grossed over $300 million and two of them hit above the $400 million mark at the box-office. To say the studios are interested in how all this works out over the course of four months is an understatement.

I have another number to throw at you, $2,692,842,266. That is the amount of money the films prior to this year's sequels made, and traditionally the sequel ends up making more money than its predecessor. So does that mean studios should expect over $3 billion in box-0ffice take from just 14 movies? I can't see that happening, especially when the American public has other choices for the summer that have their eyes on the $100 million mark. Movies like Transformers, Ratatouille, The Simpsons Movie and Knocked Up, which was made by the boys behind The 40-Year-Old Virgin which itself grossed $109 million at the box.

The question is not whether these movies are going to be good, because people pretty much go see sequels no matter what; the question is how much money is the American public going to spend each weekend. Will the crowd that spent $50 to go see Shrek the Third on May 18th go see Pirates of the Caribbean the following weekend and drop the same dough?

No matter what, it is all about entertainment and you as the consumer get to make up your own mind; I am just here to help. With that said, begin by clicking on a month to the left and start your journey down 45 movies of the Summer of 2007.
