Enough with this Restricted 'Beowulf' Crap Already!

The movie is PG-13 people!

I am growing increasingly tired of all this Restricted Beowulf stuff as Paramount continues to push their cinematic videogame on us leading us to believe it is something it isn't. It has already been said the film is going to be PG-13 even though we continually are getting these "unrated" trailers and now there is even a "Restricted" section on the official site boasting a brand new Internet-only restricted trailer. Oh boy, and guess what, you have to live in the U.S. and be 18 or older to give it a watch. What does this boil down to?

In order to watch the video you must be older than necessary to actually see an rated R film, five years older than required to even see the film and all this is in an attempt to see "restricted" video for a film that will end up being only PG-13. Oh, and did I mention the violence in the feature is computer generated? Yup, it's a videogame brought to semi-creepy-restricted-life.

As the push continues toward Beowulf's release this November the word on the film is that director Robert Zemeckis and his digital wizards have corrected the "creepy eye" factor that made Polar Express more of a freak filled film than a Christmas delight. Unfortunately they didn't fix everything else that made the people look weird such as weird looking lips and movements that are anything but human.

Based on what we are seeing it looks like we can already count on an unrated Beowulf DVD release. Therefore I am left to pray that directors will one day soon tell studios to piss off and let them make the film they have been hired to make in the first place.

If you are so inclined you can check out the new trailer here or on any of the images above, and I also posted the latest poster below.

Beowulf stars Ray Winstone, Anthony Hopkins, Brendan Gleeson, Robin Wright Penn, Angelina Jolie, Crispin Glover, John Malkovich, Alison Lohman, Brendan Gleeson and Dominic Keating as live-action digital recreations of themselves. Oh boy.

  1. Hey! Did you read my post over at ScreenRant.com? I talked about the EXACT same thing. :-)

Seems like a terrible movie marketing error to me!

This film does not interest me in the least.

I saw the preview for this with The Bourne Ultimatum, and thought it looked pretty bad. My dad said that it's the oldest story of all time and will be good.

I guess it's that kind of a movie.

I don't disagree that it's silly for people to have to be 18 instead of 17 to see R-rated content. For that matter, I think it's rather ridiculous that one must have a valid US driver's license to see these restricted trailers. However, this rant seems equally uncalled for as it's been widely publicized that Beowulf will be rated PG-13 for regular theaters, while the IMAX 3D cut would be rated R or even NC-17. I suppose the cynical could assume this is just the producers trying to pull the ol' switcheroo on internet fanboys itching for some carnage, but as of right now the stated plan is for the IMAX 3D showings to have a different, gorier film.

For the record, while I won't argue about how the film looks in a four inch box on your computer, many people who saw 20 minutes of the film at Comic-Con in San Diego have been saying the film looks visually spectactular, that Zemeckis has really made an immersive environment. I guess we'll see come November, I'd just ask that he next time you say "This movie is PG-13 people!" make sure that there aren't reports stating otherwise. Or just use some common sense, do you really think they'd have made scenes where Beowulf rips out Grendel's ear lobe just for an online trailer? ;^)

  6. Well MovieDude, I don't know where you got your information in regards to an R-rated or NC-17 cut, but it was rumored that IMAX may get an NC-17 cut so don't count on it. Rumors and speculation aren't facts until they are firmed up. Notice I mention the unrated DVD you can surely expect. I fully expect your "switcheroo".

Also, I saw the 20 minutes at Comic Con and wasn't impressed. The entire time I was just thinking, "Wow, this would be much better if it was live-action and not this silly computer generated stuff." On top of that, the question was asked at Comic Con regarding the rating and the answer was PG-13. Sorry to bust your bubble.
