Emma Stone Confirmed as 'Spider-Man' Female Lead
But it's not for the role of Mary Jane
Current hot actress of the moment, Emma Stone (Easy A, Zombieland) has been officially announced as the female lead opposite Andrew Garfield (The Social Network) in the as yet untitled Spider-Man reboot directed by Marc Webb (500 Days of Summer). Stone had previously been rumored for the role of Mary Jane Watson while Alice in Wonderland star Mia Wasikowska was rumored to be in line to score the role of Gwen Stacy, but it would appear those assumptions were wrong.
Stone will be playing Gwen Stacy, a role last played by Bryce Dallas Howard in Spider-Man 3. In the Marvel comics, Gwen becomes the first love of Peter Parker/Spider-Man when she is then killed by Green Goblin. Of course, this mythology was changed with the Sam Raimi directed trio of films that say Mary Jane, played by Kirsten Dunst, as the web-slinger's true love.
Stone wasn't even part of the first batch of names rumored for the role, which included Imogen Poots, Ophelia Lovibond, Lilly Collins, Teresa Palmer and Emma Roberts. I have to assume the recent love for her performance in Easy A and her growing relationship with the studio after Superbad, The House Bunny and Zombieland also helped out.
Commenting on the announcement, president of Columbia Pictures Matt Tolmach said, "It's been an incredible journey for us to watch Emma's star rise as an actress. She is extraordinarily talented and has a very special on-screen spark that is perfect for this role. Given her history with the studio, casting her in one of our most important franchises is a real thrill."
Production on the film is set to begin in December for a July 3, 2012 nationwide release.

Yes! Her best performance was in "Paper Man" even though it was a bad film on its own. She and Lisa Kudrow made it what it watchable with their incredible acting. Has anyone else seen Paper Man?
I have. She was good, but Easy A is by far her best work in my opinion.
Sorry, haven't seen Easy A. I should've pointed that out.
YAY YAY YAY YAY YAY
I'm so happy for her! Now I went from "not interested" to "mildly not interested" for this film. (Ok, more like "semi-interested" for Emma Stone alone.)
Wait, jumped the gun there, she's playing Gwen Stacy? I never, ever liked Gwen Stacy, not in the film or in the cartoon or comics or anything. She was never interesting to me in the way that feisty, spunky Mary Jane was (at least, the Mary Jane from the comics/cartoon series). Well, at least Emma will bring a fresh take to the role.
YES, she's perfect!! Emma Stone is becoming quickly one of my fave actresses. I've liked her since I first saw her in Superbad which was her first movie but Easy A was definitely her best role to date. I liked that movie though I thought Mean Girls was slightly better. Now, who's going to play Mary Jane? I'm kind of like Vince (Not Vance), i was not interested in seeing this but now that Emma Stone is going to be in this, i might go see it but the movie gotta look good. I'm still pretty mad that they will reboot what was going to be a great franchise. I loved all three Spider-Man films, he's my fave superhero.
She was great in Easy A, happy she is getting attention.
Meh. Srry to disagree with everyone here, but I'm not crazy about the choice of Emma stone. She's just sort of mediocre, in my opinion. They could have picked better.
Great choice. I still have to see Easy A, but she has future A+ star written all over her. I can probably see a Oscar nom or win for her in the distant future.
No matter how inspired Emma Stone's casting is, this Spiderman reboot is ridiculous. I'm not interested in it in the least. Like at all.
This franchise is hungry for greatness. This is the time to rebuild the franchise. They should utilise the villains that weren’t included in the previous films such as Beetle (Abner Jenkins), Carnage, Chameleon, Electro, Enforcers, Hammerhead, Hobgoblin, Hydro-Man, Jackal, Kingpin, Kraven the Hunter, Lizard, Morbius, Mysterio, Rhino, Scorpion, Shocker, Silvermane, Spot, Tinkerer, Tombstone, Vulture.
Mary-Jane Watson has been a love interest in every Spider-Man film. That must change. They should include the following love interests and leave Mary-Jane Watson out of the films for at least a while:
Liz Allan, Betty Brant, Gwen Stacy, Debra Whitman, April Maye, Michele Gonzales, Jean DeWolff, Jessica Drew, Lisa Skye, Marcy Kane, Angelica Jones, Felicia Hardy, Sarah Rushman, Carlie Cooper, Norah Winters.
This is a second chance to get it right. This is an opportunity.
Why not Mary Jane? She's fit for that role… and Gwen Stacy fits Dianna Agron perfectly.
Wouldn't it be ironic if the role of Mary Jane Watson ended up going to Mia Wasikowska?
First, maybe I should look into Emma Stone's support group because they seem to be doing a fine job helping her. I'm pretty sure Shirley Jones is a big supporter of hers for example.
Second, A Spiderman reboot for anyone who is old enough to have seen the first Spiderman in theaters is ridiculous! There's no way the reboot will be as good as the original. So that only leaves people under 25 who might be interested. Well, typing that, I can see the studios reasoning, but I don't see it pulling in blockbuster numbers. Maybe Fantastic Four numbers at best.
So does she become Black Cat or was that just the cartoon!? And I thought The Lizard was being talked heavily as the villan for this one.
Is Mary Jane Watson gonna be in this one!?
I am a little more excited for this new version now.
I honestly think she will do awesome as Mary Jane not Gwen Stacy. Reason being is because M.J. has red hair and Gwen is blond. So I don't even know why they won't put her as M.J.
