Early 2014 Oscar Predictions: First Best Animated Feature Line-Up

Early 2014 Oscar Predictions: Best Animated Feature

We'll get back to the acting categories next week in my early 2014 Oscar predictions with Supporting Actor and Actress, but to close off the week I thought we'd take a first look at the Best Animated Feature category where I currently have 13 contenders listed, but expect the list will grow by the end of the year as it always does.

Last year we had a total of 17 contenders and I would think with 13 titles we can almost certainly count on competing this year that 17 number is well within reach.

FrozenMy out-of-the-gate #1 is Disney's Frozen. Over the past couple of years, Disney has released Tangled and Wreck-It Ralph only to be left on the sideline. Well, I don't think Pixar is going to be able to sneak in again this year with Monsters University, though I'm certainly not counting it out, placing in the preseason #2 slot, but at some point the dramatic improvement in the content coming out of Disney Animation has to be rewarded.

At #3 I have the French-animated feature Ernest & Celestine from the talented artists behind A Town Called Panic (seriously, if you haven't seen that movie rush to do so now), which will be distributed by Gkids some time later this year after premiering at the Cannes Film Festival last year, Ernest enjoyed great reviews wherever it went and could be a major contender this year.

In fourth I'm going with Despicable Me 2. The first film wasn't nominated, but I expect this one will have even more Minions and will win over more voters as a result.

And rounding out my top five is Fox and Blue Sky's Epic even though the in-theater marketing for this thing would seem to suggest Fox is giving up before they ever begin. Seriously, all I see as I head up the stairs at a local theater here in Seattle is a giant head of some elf-like creature with the title Epic underneath it. Who is getting excited about that?

Additional titles just under Epic include Dreamworks' Turbo and The Croods and more. You can check out the full list right here.

Once again, if you don't have a free RopeofSilicon account you may want to register for one. Later this year, all contenders below the Bubble Line and not among my projected nominees will only be visible to logged in and registered members of the site. So if you haven't registered yet, you may as well do so now. It only takes a second.

There's absolutely no way that Escape From Planet Earth will get nominated. Here are my predictions:

    1. Monsters University
    2. Frozen
    3. Despicable Me 2
    4. Epic
    5. Planes

Ernest & Celestine is my alternate, but I'm hesitant to put it in due to the language barrier. It's definitely a contender

And does the Smurfs 2 even count as an animated film?

"And does the Smurfs 2 even count as an animated film?"

The first one did, so I assume yes.

This looks like 2013 is shaping up to be the worst year in animation in a very long time.

    • Chris Etrata

There were only 3 animated films that i have shown any real interest in (although I will see them all.) They are Croods, Monsters University, and Frozen (maybe Despicable me 2 but I need more footage.) And the Croods was a disappointment for me.

Planes will be last on my list. In all honesty that movie looks like a straight to DVD movie.

No point in agruing, a Pixar movie or Frozen will win it....

Hard to believe that not so many years ago people were predicting animated films were dead. I think "The Little Mermaid" was something of a turning point and for a time only Disney seemed to have success with animation, but then ..... BOOM!

    • JK1193

Little Mermaid definately helped, but it started with Roger Rabbit initially. The way that the animation was used alongside the live-action in that film was unlike anything anyone saw at that time.

So far, I saw Escape from Planet Earth and it was a bad film with annoying characters, dull animation, and basic plot. I saw Croods at a preview screening and that one was okay but one of dreamworks weaker films. I thought the animation was beautiful but the plot, while having an interesting concept, plays it too safe with cliches. I thought the characters were also underdeveloped. Sad thing about Croods is that I was looking forward to this. Neither this or Escape from Planet Earth will be in the nominees list.

And the winner of the Pixar Oscar goes to......Pixar

    • Stiggy

There is an off chance that Monsters University and Planes splits the Pixar vote leaving a window open for an alternative choice.

      • Danny

Planes is not a Pixar movie. It is a spinoff of Cars, but Pixar is not doing the animation for it at all, Disney Animation studio is. So i doubt that it will split the Pixar vote with Monsters University.

Actually, not even that. DisneyToon Studios is animating Planes. They handle Disney's direct-to-DVD stuff. Planes was meant to go straight to DVD until somebody at Disney realized they could generate even more money this way. They should put "From the people who brought you Mulan II" on the poster.
