DVD Review: Vantage Point
It's the same fifteen minutes repeated eight goddamn times!
Vantage Point is the kind of movie that could quite possibly appeal to people browsing their local video store in search of a quick action fix. All I can really do for these people is tell them not to and throw other DVDs at them, but I don't think Brad would accept proof of such an incident as my review. Instead, I have decided to give Vantage Point the verbal beating it rightfully deserves. This movie is so bad and I am so bitter for having watched it, it's very hard to just not type a page of profanities.
From its cast of has-beens, "that guys", and a slumming Forest Whitaker to its clichéd plot about a presidential assassination, everything about Vantage Point is a celebration of generic thrillers. In other words, it feels just like an episode of "24". This would all have been bearable and maybe sort of fun if it weren't for one thing; Vantage Point is constructed around a shit concept. Playing out like an idiotic version of Before the Devil Knows You're Dead, this really is nothing but the same fifteen minutes repeated eight goddamn times. This could have been potentially interesting, but the makers of Vantage Point completely half-assed it, turning in one of the laziest movies of the year. The various perspectives turn out to be nothing more than cheap gimmicks, with the script picking up and dropping its subjects as it sees convenient, never giving the story space to grow naturally. There are more plot holes than there are minutes in the runtime, and everything in Vantage Point had been done before and better. The plot serves no purpose other than to force its way into another action scene, and it has absolutely no respect for its audience. [ ... ]
