DVD Review: Drillbit Taylor (Hilarious Extended Edition)
Boooo, Boooo, Hissssssss
Watching the Owen Wilson vehicle Drillbit Taylor in theaters was painful enough, but having to endure a "Hilarious Extended Edition" on DVD was something akin torture. If last week I admitted to being a bit too harsh on the Martin Lawrence film Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins the first time I watched it, a case could be made where it came to this motion picture I just wasn't hard enough. Next to You Don't Mess with the Zohan, this just might be the year's worst comedy, and if anyone comes up and tries to tell you different I suggest you run screaming in the opposite direction..
The movie concerns three high school freshmen, best friends Ryan (Troy Gentile) and Wade (Nate Hartley) along with new hyperactive tagalong Emmit (David Dorfman), who suddenly find they're on the receiving end of resident evil bully Filkins's (Alex Frost) wrath. Unable to protect themselves, they hire what they believe to be is a down-on-his-luck former Army Ranger named Drillbit Taylor (Owen Wilson) to be their bodyguard and protector.
What happens next isn't exactly a surprise. Working from an original story by John Hughes (billed under the swashbuckling pseudonym Edmond Dantes) and produced by current comedic wunderkind Judd Apatow, this Steven Brill (Little Nicky) directed mess is pretty much an outright disaster. The supposed hero (and I use that word loosely) is a lackadaisical loser whom I despised. Watching Drillbit work his magic on the three boys was about as humorous and inspiring as a swift kick to the head by a steel-toed boot. [ ... ]
