I didn't happen to catch Ten Yards in the theaters, but now that I have had a chance to look over the DVD I understand why it didn't fare so well, which is also evident by the fact that the DVD comes equipped with one special feature, an audio commentary with director Howard Deutch and screenwriter George Gallo.
While the film isn't absolutely awful there is really no cohesion throughout the whole thing and you are forced to find humor in Matthew Perry constantly running into things and former hit man Jimmy "The Tulip" Tudeski (Willis) acting out his Susie homemaker role in an apron and bunny slippers. The vision in your head might be funny but on screen it is just a bit tired.
I wasn't at all surprised to hear on the DVD commentary that the script was more-or-less written on the fly and pieces of the story were changed as they went. I am not quite sure to what degree this happens on other films, but I have to assume that the overall storyline is never drastically affected as it seemed to be in this case.
By no means could I recommend you buy this but if you are at a loss at the video store for something to rent you could do worse than The Whole Ten Yards, but that doesn't necessarily make it the best choice.
