The Untouchables (DVD)

"The Untouchables" - DVD Review

The Untouchables is a Paramount Home Entertainment release and is rated R.

The running time is 1 hr. 59 mins..

I want to make a gangster film about Al Capone and I want Sean Connery, Andy Garcia, Bobby De Niro and I guess Kevin Costner will work for the Ness character. Oh yeah, and I want Ennio Morricone to score the film. What? You want Bob Hoskins to play Capone? Well, I won't do this without De Niro in the role and you have to pay him what he asks for.

Does that sound probable at all, or even like a conversation you could ever imagine a director having with studio execs? Well it didn't go exactly like that but to hear Brian De Palma describe the process in which everyone was brought on to The Untouchables you would think that this movie was destined for success before a single scene was shot.

Personally The Untouchables doesn't even compare to GoodFellas or The Godfather but there is no denying the imagination that went into reinventing the 1930s gangster film as De Palma went for color and glamour to bring the seedy underworld into the forefront. Personally I just don't think it is all that great, and don't understand why so many people disagree.

This special collector's edition of The Untouchables doesn't really give you much more than a new four-part featurette, a classic featurette and the theatrical trailer. The new featurette is presented in four parts, which make up the one and go into the casting for the film, the actual production, the different style De Palma took to recreating 1930s Chicago and a look at the impact The Untouchables had as an obvious classic film.

As far as sound goes the 5.1 audio track was available on the first DVD release of The Untouchables so it really comes down to whether or not you already own this film or not to determine whether you want to drop some cash on it since I wouldn't reinvest my money just for the new featurette.
