Under the Cherry Moon is a Warner Home Video release and is rated
PG-13.
The running time is 1 hr. 39 mins..
Under the Cherry Moon is easily the worst film of the three that Prince made, fortunately for Prince fans and music lovers the music is so good it makes the film bearable. Songs such as
Girls and Boys,
Kiss and
Anotherloverholenyohead bring the free-living lifestyle the movie sets out to portray to life.
The problem with everything I have already said is that this movie will only appeal to true Prince fans, which is evident from its overwhelming representation from the 1986 Razzie Awards as it won five Golden Raspberries out of its eight nominations. However, something you may not know is that this was Kristin Scott Thomas's first major film role as she plays the female lead, Mary Sharon.
Filmed entirely in black and white the picture portrays two players Christopher Tracy (Prince) and his pal (Jerome Benton) as they scour the French Riviera as male gigolos intent on sucking the bank accounts of bored divorcees dry.
When the focus soon turns to Mary Sharon Christopher's interest in money soon takes a back seat to his feelings of love.
The problem with this is the serious nature of the overall plotline is overshadowed by corny acting and poor attempts at humor leaving the film without any real direction as it pulls the audience back and forth, while never actually pulling itself together.
As far as special features go they may be the main reason to buy this DVD as it features four music videos including
Kiss,
Anotherloverholenyohead,
Girls & Boys and
Mountains.
Recommending this film to anyone other than die hard Prince fans would be a mistake, but if recent concert sales are an indicator of that audience this DVD shouldn't have any problem making sales.
