"Superbad (2-Disc Unrated Edition)" - DVD Review
Skip Down to Special FeaturesREVIEWED BY Domenic Padulo
It's known that there are very few honest high school movies, and as a student myself, I firmly believe in it. With the exception of a few masterpieces like Brick, Rushmore and Dazed & Confused, few films have ever been able (or bothered to try) to even acknowledge existence of students who are not cheerleaders or on the football team. Superbad can now be counted among those ranks, because it pulls off the nearly impossible feat of being a hysterically crass comedy about kids trying to lose their virginity and score booze, while also treating them like real people.

At its core, the plot of Superbad can be reduced to the simple elements of alcohol and sex. Much like other movies made under the watchful eye of Judd Apatow, however, the simplicity of plot is liberating rather than restricting. By using these overtly simple, time-tested themes, writers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg have allowed the film to devote itself to a freewheeling work of comedic genius that perfects the improvisational style Apatow's "Jew-Tang Clan" has honed over the past few years. The end result is one of the year's funniest films, and the "Clan's" finest to date. Superbad is a movie that is uproarious from the first frame and for the rest of its runtime (almost two hours) builds on that momentum. This is a movie that quickly spirals into a dark, nightmare version of Southern California, and as our young heroes, Evan (Michael Cera), Seth (Jonah Hill) and McLovin (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) find themselves knee deep in shit you just can't help but laugh.

The highlight of Superbad is, without a doubt, the amazing cast. Cera, Hill and Mintz-Plasse have amazing chemistry together, and deliver their lines hysterically, but remain believable. The rest of the cast is also great, particularly Rogen and Bill Hader as a pair of irresponsible psychotic cops. Their Officers Michaels and Slater provide plenty of unhinged laughs, while serving as older, mirror images of what Seth and Evan may become one day if they don't watch themselves. I could easily write pages and pages of praise for every other performance in this movie, but I won't, because it would get tedious and you would hate me (I don't need that). Not a single part in this film is miscast, and director Greg Mottola is great at coaxing performances out his younger actors without making them seem obnoxious.

Rejecting the norms of today's comedy DVDs, the two-disc edition of Superbad is loaded with special features that are actually worth watching. There is plenty of unused footage as is the case with most Apatow movies, and all of it is funny. There is a plethora of other great features, including "Cop Car Confessions" a hilarious feature that incorporates several of Apatow's actors, audition tapes, and a table read from 2002. The best features though are "Everyone Hates Michael Cera" and the "Press Junket Meltdown". They both offer offbeat exaggerations of the real life personas of those involved, and are very, very funny. I never thought I would get to type these words, but this DVD contains specials features that are very much worth your time.

Superbad is a great movie, and is one the year's funniest. If you've been a teenager, or just like to laugh at crass shit, then this is definitely worth the purchase. This is the best movie Apatow has ever been involved with, and can only be described as a masterpiece of vulgarity. There is no room for disagreement.
