"Starsky & Hutch" - DVD Review

Starsky & Hutch is a Warner Home Video release and is rated PG-13.

The running time is 1 hr. 40 mins.

I had to go back and read my review of the theatrical release of Starsky & Hutch since I remembered I didn't give it a great review, but not a horrible one. My main reason for going back is because I did enjoy watching it again on DVD, but I also believe this is a type of movie that is much better suited for DVD than for the big screen.

There is a lot of comedy here and I dismissed mentioning his performance in my theatrical review, but I will not overlook him here as Will Ferrell has one hell of a great scene in this movie along with everyone else involved. Now I won't go back and now say this is a fabulous film that you must run out to buy right now, but I will say that my "C+" grade may have been a tad harsh and maybe a "B" was in order. With that said let's see what we have here.

As far as the special features go, you don't have a ton, but just enough to suit your palette with one mockumentary, you usual gag reel and deleted scenes, "Fashion Fa Shizzle Wit Huggy Bizzle", a commentary track with director Todd Phillips and a special Easter Egg I shall help you find.

First for the "Last Look" Mockumentary, which is quite funny as cast members and producers weigh in on the production usually leaving Todd Phillips as the one in the dark, and as stupid as it is, it is actually quite funny.

As far as your usuals go with the gag reel and deleted scenes, I do think there are a couple of scenes here worth checking out but the gag reel just wasn't really all that funny despite the people involved.

Speaking of not funny, you can go ahead and dismiss "Fashion Fa Shizzle Wit Huggy Bizzle" considering it is just a wardrobe check with Snoop Dogg, which really has no comedic value, which was really disappointing. I was looking for something along the lines of his MTV television show, but got more of a commercial.

Then there is the commentary with Todd Phillips, which I really didn't get much out of, but it wasn't because he didn't have good stuff to say it was usually because his monotone voice just blended in too well and was really easy to ignore and my attention just stayed on the movie.

Ah yes, I guess I better tell you how to get to a pretty funny hidden Easter Egg on the DVD so just follow these simple steps: Go to Special Features and when you have the star on either DELETED SCENES, GAG REEL or THEATRICAL TRAILER just hit right on your remote to highlight the big star on the right for a funny little bit with Vince Vaughn and a security guard.

Overall, I was much more impressed with this flick on DVD than I was in the theater, but I do think that movies like these are much better enjoyed at home, and I am waiting to get my hands on a DVD copy of Dodgeball to see if that theory holds true. If you enjoyed the movie in theaters you will enjoy the DVD, I know I will probably watch it a couple more times, but at the same time I won't wear it out.
