Stardust is proof that if the audience doesn't support your film in theaters then studios aren't going to do much for it on DVD. This is one of the best films of 2007, the problem came down to marketing.
Stardust is impossible to market. The story is gigantic, there isn't a single idea you can focus on, and the fact that they were able to piece together anything to get audiences interested is a miracle.
The film did impressive numbers overseas despite the meager $38 million it did here in the States. Unfortunately when it comes to home video in the States it all depends on how much Americans liked it in theaters and since it was ignored for the most part, the DVD is getting no special treatment outside of one gray disc, a making of featurette and a blooper reel. Fortunately the movie is all I need to be happy and the same goes for you too.
Stardust is a product of the imagination of Neil Gaiman, whose graphic novels have found legions of fans, which it appears are the only ones that turned out to see this fantasy epic. I will do my best to boil down the story for you, but it is altogether too big to give you a brief overview.
The film centers on a local shop boy named Tristan living in the town of Wall. Tristan fancies the local beauty Victoria (Sienna Miller) and in an effort to win her heart he has promised to bring her back a star the two saw fall from the sky. The twist of the story is that the star has fallen in the land of Stormhold, a magical land separated from Wall by a long stone wall with only a single gap. Tristan ultimately finds the star only to discover it goes by the name of Yvaine and is a person. Unfortunately for Tristan he is not the only one in search of the star as a wicked witch is on the move as is the heir to the throne of Stormhold, whose father is the cause of Yvaine's fall from the sky.
Confused? Well, just be thankful I didn't introduce you to the rest of the story, because it soon becomes difficult to introduce it all without giving away the whole story.
Stardust is a film you are just going to have to take my word on and trust me that it is good. If you find yourself agreeing with many of the reviews I write then this is certainly one to add to your collection. On the other hand, if bad films and cliché story-telling are your thing then this is not for you... might I suggest the Halloween remake for your boring palette.
