The first season of "Star Trek: Enterprise" shocked the hell out of me, being a fan of the "Original Series" and the "Original Series" alone I had little to no expectations of "Enterprise" being any good considering I found every "Star Trek" thereafter absolutely horrible. Therefore, once I got through the first season and loved it and sat on the edge of my seat thanks to a well drawn out cliffhanger of an ending I couldn't wait to check out the second season... Unfortunately, while the second season is moderately entertaining most of the good seems to have already been drained out as little to nothing happens during the entire duration of these latest 26 episodes.
All that said, this season simply doesn't make the grade as it seems like the budget was far inferior to the previous season and exotic locales were far from the norm. The promise of Klingon battles were there the entire time as the menu system for all seven discs sported the Klingon Bird of Prey warship, yet it wasn't until the final episodes that the alien race played any sizeable part in the way things worked out and the good stuff was left to a third season cliffhanger, which left me with quite a sour taste in my mouth.
As far as the DVD set goes this one is just as good as the rest of the "Star Trek" releases from Paramount as they continue to treat their prized franchise very well, with superior packaging efforts and a bounty of special features that remain interesting even for those of us that don't really care much for delving too far into the "Star Trek" universe.
The features range from the always-there text and audio commentaries, some really bad outtakes, deleted scenes and five featurettes. The featurettes focus on a quick look at "Enterprise" moments from the second season, a profile of Jolene Blaylock and her portrayal of the Vulcan science officer T'Pal, a look at director LeVar Burton, a second installment of "Enterprise" secrets looking at how they make some of that TV show magic and a deeper look at the episode "A Night in Sickbay," which really talks for the most part on how they try to make an episode good while keeping the budget down, something they term a "Ship Show." Also, just like the first season release there are some hidden Easter Eggs, but those are not even worth the search.
Overall, I was disappointed in the second season, primarily because the first season was so good and surprised me so much. I know it is always unfair to compare as each season is and of itself a unique storyline, but even the way the first season cliffhanger was handled bothered me, there just wasn't enough to like, I only hope the third season release gets back to what made this show good in the first place... GIMMEE ACTION!
