By this time if you have not yet seen "Rescue Me" then shame on you, click here and get season one and get started. If you are a fan of "nip/tuck", "The Shield" or seemingly anything FX puts on television then you are ready for "Rescue Me". However, if you are a bible thumping censorship fiend then stay clear.
From a story perspective "Rescue Me" is far from a perfect television show, but it is a lot of fun. When the show isn't trying to be what it isn't, and that is overly dramatic, it is always entertaining, funny and compelling. I never would have thought Denis Leary could actually be at the forefront of a dramatic television series, but don't look now, he is. While the show does center on Leary's character Tommy, it is the supporting cast that really helps this show along, especially Steven Pasquale as Sean Garrity and Daniel Sunjata as Franco Rivera. Oh, I should also mention the bi-sexual tendencies of Mike Lombardi's character Mike Silletti. Mix the fact that Mike is confused with his sexual direction with a firehouse of testosterone driven frat boys and you have your show.
"Rescue Me" is sexy, violent, funny and emotional and while occasionally weak writing, notably the season finale and the whole storyline with Sheila and Tommy, doesn't propel this film into the upper echelon it does make it a worthy watch, especially on DVD. Take out the commercials and you can hammer through these 13 episodes in no time.
On top of that there are several special features, the best of which include a comedy short on disc one that is surprisingly funny, a feature on Denis Leary, a feature on Mike's gay tendencies, a great gag reel and the deleted scenes are even good. If you are looking forward to the Season 4 Preview, don't, it shows nothing and by nothing I literally mean nothing. By now I have grown tired of the firefighter features, especially since the firefighting has started to take a back seat in this show and they have done this with the previous two seasons, enough is enough in my case.
Buy this season along with the first two. Like "nip/tuck" and "The Shield" this is another FX success of grit, grime and sexually inappropriate and chauvinistic humor. I love it!
