Whereas "Boston Legal" is pretty much dedicated to a mixture of drama and comedy "The Practice" is more concerned with the drama element of the law. The show is still focused on the defense side of the courtroom, but this is a series that starts off looking at a small-time practice just trying to make ends meet, and while the featurette included in this season set tells us they had to ramp up the nature of the cases in later seasons it is nice to see a show try and not glamorize things for a change, even if they had to change stride later on.
Dylan McDermott stars as Bobby Donnell, head of his own small practice with five staffers underneath him. Whether it’s defending drug dealers, murderers or big tobacco they take on anyone and anything just to earn a dollar. While those may seem a little bigger than I originally led you to believe they never have that "big courtroom" feel. The first season of "The Practice" is a dialogue driven season and that is what attracted me to it, because it is good dialogue and well acted to boot.
This first season is spread across four discs and only carries 13 episodes and the lone featurette I mentioned earlier. Seen in only a few of the first season episodes is Lara Flynn Boyle who takes on a larger role in later seasons to which there are eight in total and I can't wait to get my hands on all of them.
