The Blu-ray release of
National Treasure boasts the same special features that were available on the 2-Disc Collector's Edition DVD that was released in December of 2007. The only difference, of course, is the video and sound quality along with a commentary track with director Jon Turteltaub and actor Justin Bartha who plays Riley in the film.
Like I said, this is Blu-ray, it looks spectacular and sounds great as well. National Treasure is a film that actually takes advantage of the improved visuals through its use of warm colors that pop off the screen against some of the film's darker moments. It's one of those popcorn action films and if you are like me and actually like it you will watch this one repeatedly, which certainly adds to your reasoning to buy it for the first time on Blu-ray or possibly upgrade even though I am hesitant to advise anyone ever upgrade unless it is truly one of your absolute favorite films.
For me National Treasure sits on the same shelf as The Mummy and The Mummy Returns in terms of its ridiculous plot but the fun I have watching it. The new commentary track that comes on this disc is okay, sort of, but I would never tell anyone they had to listen to it. Secondly, the exclusive Blu-ray feature that takes a close examination of the Declaration of Independence is mind-numbingly stupid and I advise you to avoid it at all costs.
This is a disc you are buying for its popcorn fun and mindless entertainment value. A lot of it doesn't make sense, but it moves at a brisk enough pace that you don't mind. I think most everyone would enjoy owning this one, whether it's on Blu-ray or that DVD version you already own I don't think there is a real difference. The picture here is obviously better, but if that isn't important to you, you should be fine with your current disc.
