Ladder 49 (DVD)

For whatever reason, critics didn't seem to take to Ladder 49 as much as I did, but I loved it, from Joaquin Phoenix's impressive performance to the spectacular visuals, Ladder 49 is a triumph and a definite must own DVD.

The film chronicles the life of fireman Jack Morrison (Phoenix) and the men of his firehouse as they continually risk life and limb to save the lives of others while trying to maintain a normal life of their own at the same time. Obviously this film is going to delve into the loss of friends on the job and the suffering of those who loved them but through a series of flashbacks and bouts in real-time Ladder 49 is able to keep the suspense moving along just as it raises the emotional bar.

The DVD offers up the film in either fullscreen or a widescreen version, equipped with Dolby 5.1 surround, enhanced with a Home Theater mix that is quite impressive, along with a bevy of features that really aren't that much to brag about and frankly are rather boring in comparison to the film.

What will be worth your while in the bonus feature department is the making-of featurette as it shows you just what the actors needed to do to prepare for the film as they went through actual firefighter training.

Besides that the deleted scenes are pretty much standard as is the commentary with director Jay Russell and editor Bud Smith as they take you through the film telling you only a tidbit here or there that wasn't found on the making-of feature.

Finishing off the package is a spotlight on real firefighters and the music video for "Shine Your Light" by Robbie Robertson.

Although the bonus features don't add much to the deal, Ladder 49 is a movie not to be missed and one I am happy to have part as my collection.
