Oh Daniel-son...
The Karate Kid is a trilogy of films that I grew up with and almost had me dancing around a dojo when it first came out, as I am sure it did for several others as well.
The Karate Kid DVD Collection offers up enough nostalgia to fill a weekend and then some as the 80s come back for one more round with the scrawny kid from New Jersey and his new found teacher.
On top of the three
Karate Kid films, which we all know the first was the best, number two was okay and the third really wasn't necessary as it added nothing at all to the series, but we also get the Hilary Swank starrer,
The Next Karate Kid.
That's right folks, the two-time Golden Globe and Oscar-winning actress got her big break as the female version of our hero, and if you thought
Karate Kid III was no good, you may as well never put this one in the player.
As for special features, there isn't a lot to talk about since
Karate Kid II and
III along with
The Next Karate Kid really don't have any, however
The Karate Kid has its fare share.
On the original we get a lively feature length audio commentary featuring director John Avildsen, Pat Morita, Ralph Macchio and writer Robert Kamen. The four of these guys yuck it up as if they were long lost war buddies and really make it a worthwhile listen, but in moderation, it can become a bit overbearing.
The other features on the disc include a two-part, in depth documentary on the making of
The Karate Kid, along with a bonsai tree featurette (boring), a look at the score of
The Karate Kid, a look at karate itself and trailers are available for
Karate Kid and
Karate Kid Part II.
Overall I enjoyed this collection, not for the features but just to revisit films I grew up with and still enjoy, and for $25.87 at Amazon how can you go wrong?
