Wow, when you catch "Home Improvement" in syndication you really don't have any way of telling what season each episode is from, and you don't really care. So, when I tossed in disc one from the fourth season I didn't realize that I was actually tapping in to the worst season of the first four.

Every show has its low points; "Seinfeld" had a few bad seasons as it got closer to its final days, even "Friends" suffered with that whole Ross marrying the Brit chick Emily. So, when a show like "Home Improvement" hits a low it is no surprise and considering it isn't a show that has a week-to-week storyline it is understandable that it could lose its focus at times, which is really what this season does. Aside from "Tool Time", the kids growing up and Jill Taylor's (Patricia Richardson) out-of-the-house experiences the show simply presents the day-to-day inner workings of the Taylor family. This is not a complaint; it is actually a breath of fresh air to relive a sitcom that doesn't have to fall back on drama to provide mindless, comedic entertainment.

Too often comedic sitcoms have to resort to weekly installments of "what is going to be this week's cliffhanger" to keep the viewers interested. "Home Improvement" took the approach that they would present the show as a weekly look into one family's life as Tim (Tim Allen) screws up everything in sight, Mr. Wilson (Earl Hindman) offers up wisdom and the kids wreak havoc (Taran Noah Smith, Jonathan Taylor Thomas, Zachery Ty Bryan). By the way, did you see Zachery Ty Bryan in Fast and the Furious 3? Man, the career sort of hit the skids after this show ended for that guy eh? Then again, at least he is getting roles, can't fault him there.

Beyond the 26 season four episodes this set comes with a group of never-before-seen bloopers, which are a bit tiresome considering each episode also carries its own set of bloopers. Basically... didn't really care.

On a whole, I just wasn't feeling this season. I couldn't get into it. I still enjoy this show and this wouldn't make a bad purchase if you enjoy "Home Improvement", but in comparison to the previous three seasons, the fourth forgot to bring the funny.
