"Footloose: Special Collector's Edition" - DVD Review

Footloose: Special Collector's Edition is a Paramount Home Entertainment release and is rated PG.

The running time is 1 hr. 47 mins.

Who doesn't know the lyrics to Kenny Loggins smash hit Footloose, and who doesn't love this movie? Well, I am sure there are some of you, but if you are a product of the 80s Footloose is a movie you grew up with and who can deny a movie with such taglines as, "He's a big-city kid in a small town. They said he'd never win. He knew he had to." WOW, that is powerful, but let's cut down on the sarcasm, this truly is a great movie.

If you actually sit down and consider the premise of Footloose, which revolves aroung a small town that has banned public dancing you have got to think of it as a ridiculous notion but, as the commentary and featurettes on the DVD point out, it actually happened and was the inspiration behind the movie as some rural town in Oklahoma actually banned public dancing. Wonder where the stick is in that town?

Nevertheless, the seemingly stupid idea makes for such a fun movie it is addictive. With several memorable lines and one hell of a soundtrack that is so representative of the 80s it could be considered the soundtrack of a generation.

Even though I liked the movie a lot I wondered just how Paramount could turn this into a "Special" edition DVD and while the three featurettes about the making-of the movie and the music of the movie are pretty standard the best part of the DVD is Kevin Bacon's commentary track.

Most often actor commentaries are boring or ridiculous as they joke around too much and try to act goofy, but Kevin's take on the commentary is so different than most considering he had not seen the movie since the 80s and was revisiting it for the first time in a long time, it is a really good listen.

The one thing that would have made this an awesome edition would have been if the soundtrack was included with the DVD like the soundtrack is included with the 35th Anniversary Edition of Easy Rider. The Footloose soundtrack is just as popular as the movie and it would have been a great bonus.

I am not sure what kind of legs Footloose has and if it would actually be able to relate to the kids of the 90s but for the rest of you I recommend this one whole-heartedly, you gotta cut Footloose.
